Wall of text provided so you don't have to give NYT a click. But just in case: LINK

quote:

SAN FRANCISCO — Evan Williams is the guy who opened up Pandora’s box. Until he came along, people had few places to go with their overflowing emotions and wild opinions, other than writing a letter to the newspaper or haranguing the neighbors.

Mr. Williams — a Twitter founder, a co-creator of Blogger — set everyone free, providing tools to address the world. In the history of communications technology, it was a development with echoes of Gutenberg.

And so here we are in 2017. How’s it going, Mr. Williams?

“I think the internet is broken,” he says. He has believed this for a few years, actually. But things are getting worse. “And it’s a lot more obvious to a lot of people that it’s broken.”

quote:

“I thought once everybody could speak freely and exchange information and ideas, the world is automatically going to be a better place,” Mr. Williams says. “I was wrong about that.”

quote:

The trouble with the internet, Mr. Williams says, is that it rewards extremes. Say you’re driving down the road and see a car crash. Of course you look. Everyone looks. The internet interprets behavior like this to mean everyone is asking for car crashes, so it tries to supply them.

quote:

Mr. Williams isn’t the only one trying to fix this mess, of course. If he and others can’t find a path forward, if they can’t solve what he calls “the architecture of content creation, distribution and monetization on the internet,” there are unsettling implications for the future of news and ideas. Maybe it will be all car crashes, all the time. Twitter already feels like that.

quote:

A few years ago, Twitter was viewed as a tool of liberation. It enabled, some believed, the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East. Twitter, like the internet itself, was putting tyranny on a short leash.

quote:

Then the narrative turned darker, with the rise of trolling on the platform.

President Trump has said he believes Twitter put him in the White House. Recently, Mr. Williams heard the claim for the first time. He mulled it over for a bit, sitting in his Medium office, which is noteworthy only for not having a desk.

“It’s a very bad thing, Twitter’s role in that,” he said finally. “If it’s true that he wouldn’t be president if it weren’t for Twitter, then yeah, I’m sorry.”

In a commencement speech at the University of Nebraska this month, Mr. Williams noted that Silicon Valley has a tendency to see itself as a Prometheus, stealing fire from selfish gatekeeper gods and bestowing it on mere mortals. “What we tend to forget is that Zeus was so pissed at Prometheus that he chained him to a rock so eagles could peck out his guts for eternity,” Mr. Williams told the crowd. “Some would say that’s what we deserve for giving the power of tweets to Donald Trump.”

quote:

It was just another Utopian dream, Mr. Williams says. “The problem is that not everyone is going to be cool, because humans are humans,” he says. “There’s a lock on our office door and our homes at night. The internet was started without the expectation that we’d have to do that online.”

This self serving virtue signalling bs is a bigger problem than the internet.

They thought it would be a great tool to advance THEIR agenda and when conservatives get more traction than the left they call it broken.

Typical liberal garbage. The internet is neither good nor bad. It's used by people who use it for good things and bad things. The same thing is said about guns but it is obvious this dude denies human nature.

The whole bunch of them are a rot on humanity. Tonight on Tucker, the gentleman with an open discussion show from all disciplines and view points.

Explaining how YouTube has "demonetized" 90% of his content. That means all of his ad dollars are lost. YouTube would not respond to his pleas for "why", but apparently Tucker's show got a response from them that essentially was a baseless shill on content of his shows.

Hell the DNC had every dammed leftist in the country on twitter for Hillary the loser.

Censorship marching forward.

I have old man questions that have always confused me. Does Twitter only make money from ads it sells to vendors? If so, is the money paid up front or is it on # of hits on an ad? Combination of both?

I ask this because to the best of my knowledge I can't ever recall hitting a link for an ad while on an internet site. Other than when executing a search to purchase an item.

Tigerdroppings is based af and truly a blessing on the internet, mostly decent to quite good anons.

Full immersion platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and the like need to be checked. They are the most powerful weapons on earth and have ushered in an unhealthy kind of political warfare.

The internet isn't broken, it just amplifies echo chambers that already existed.

Was it twitters fault that Hillary ignored her beautiful blue wall up north?

Ev is a pole smoker just like Jack.

He created the biggest propaganda machine the world has ever seen and ended up a billionaire.

The internet is broken, yes, but that is because it is controlled by a handful of people who are attempting to play God.

Chicken never gets enough credit for creating a place where anyone can post regardless of their political beliefs or favorite sports team.

This is all code for:

"I feel guilty because Trump used Twitter to get elected. If only we can exclude those voices we don't like, we can fix it."
