Donald Trump wasn't asked much about the economy during his press conference on Wednesday, but when he was, the president-elect managed a rather colossal error.

Trump said that there "are 96 million wanting a job and they can't get (one). You know that story. The real number. That's the real number."

It is unfortunately very far from the real number. There are in fact 96 million Americans age 16 and older who are not in the labor force. Of this, just 5.4 million, or 91 million fewer than the number cited by Trump, say they want a job. The rest are retired, sick, disabled, running their households or going to school. (This number is 256,000 fewer than last year and 1.7 million fewer than the all-time high for the series in 2013.)
Seems pretty likely Trump knows the difference (even if he might be too lazy to care). Seems less likely the average Trump voter knows or cares about the difference (or facts of any kind).

A more charitable explanation for Trump would expand the number to include those people who are working part time because they can't find full-time work, all the unemployed and those marginally attached to the workforce. This broader measure of slack in the economy, known as the U6, is about 14.7 million. It's the lowest since May 2008, and has come down by nearly 12 million since the worst of the job market effects of the financial crisis in 2010. And remember, many of these folks have work, though it's part time.
So, best case, he's only off by 650%. :fakenews: LINK

Quick perusal of that board puts the truth to that statement.

Hell, you guys think Obama was born in Kenya and Clinton is running a child sex ring out of a pizza shop.

Low expectations carried Trump to the Presidency. I think we can all agree that he wasn't chosen for his knowledge or eloquence. He was chosen because he would piss off Democrats and true conservatives.

Great job presenting facts. But this is a no-fact pro-Trump board. Downvotes incoming your way!

The number of Americans participating in there labor force has declined under Obama.

There's no way you can spin that.

So as you predicted long ago, this revelation will prevent him from getting the Republican nomination, amirite?

yep, dudes a dildo. But he's not Hilldabeast and will probably appoint a quality justice(s) to the SCOTUS.

This is not news.

Perhaps. There have been quite a few troll picks for his cabinet. As long as Republicans continue to bow down to their god emperor there won't be any problems. If they show any non-partisanship or independence from the POTUS then he will rage like a child and actively try to undermine them and piss them off.

What percentage of that is due to baby boomers retiring? Serious question.

That's great news!

With a lower numerator, this will make all the jobs he's already created as President-Elect that much more impactful on the true unemployment rate.

Welp. That's it folks. Time to invalidate the election, declare martial law, and put a Democrat in the Oval Office for life.

Then we shall march forward to peace and prosperity...for ever and ever.

Negates all of this

But then again you aren't worried about FTE's. Just build a few more Taco Bells and Arby's and everyone will have jobs.

Much of that is due to baby boomers retiring and increasing technological automation of jobs. The President can't do much when jobs get automated by machines, which is happening at an increasing rate.

So, again, the criticism of Trump boils down to semantics and a hyper-literal interpretation of his words.
