Trump’s First Budget May Zero Out Federal Transit Funding

Funding in jeopardy:

Trump’s budget won’t be released for a few more weeks, but according to the Hill, it will draw heavily from a Heritage policy document that calls for taking an axe to conservative targets like the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Of course, Heritage wants to put transit on the chopping block too.
Funding in jeopardy:

Eliminate major capital investment in transit — $2.2 billion annually
Eliminate funding for Amtrak – $519 million annually

How does wiping out the FTA while keeping the highway funding flowing do that more than say, fixing SS and Medicare?
(FWIW, I don't think Trump is actually going to gut the FTA, it's only speculation at this point).

The only folks who care about Federal Transit Funding are folks on the East Coast and in a few urban areas, all of which are deep blue. The DC/Philly/NYC Amtrak train must be subsidized by the rest of us so liberals can have cheaper train rides. The media uses the crap out of it because they don't want to drive and flying is too much of a pain with the 3 cities so close. Flyover folks don't understand their pain.

Cutting the subsidized portion of Amtrak operations isn’t actually popular with GOP lawmakers representing those parts of the country.
