Trump has told his aides that the wall remains a top priority and he will personally oversee aspects of the project/construction

That will make for some interesting photos, to say the least. The head honcho will visit his big project and will survey it with binoculars and the like.

he'll be in the room when the blueprints are drawn

We love our construction, don't we folks.

We have the best concrete.

And Mexico WILL pay for it.

I don's believe that for a second. Its a collosal waste of money. How high is it going to be? 25 feet?

If it can effectively limit and deter illegal immigration, wouldn't it be a net benefit in even the medium term?

I think you're engaging him wrong. When you force your neighbor to pay for the road in front of your house, you're not wasting any money

Well, of course - he's going to build that photo essay for 2020.

"Remember when they said I wouldn't do X?" *picture of him signing legislation or EO for X*

"Remember when they said I wouldn't build the wall?" *picture of Trump actually building the actual wall*

"Remember when they said I wouldn't 'Make America Great Again'?" *All kinds of graphs with the good stuff going up and the bad stuff going down*

Keep America Great! (Trump/Pence 2020)

If they thought he was bullshitting, they were messing with the wrong NYC hombre.

My question did not assume a continuous wall, although the idea is pretty entertaining. I asked if the cost of the wall, high though it may be, would be worth it if it deterred illegal immigration enough to offset direct transfer benefits and other assorted costs with the aforementioned immigrants.
