Trump says 'fairly close' to deal with Democrats on immigration issues

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he and lawmakers are close to a deal on protections for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children, but stressed any such deal would need to include border security measures.

The Republican president met with Democratic congressional leaders on Wednesday evening to discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a policy enacted by Democratic former President Barack Obama that protected so-called Dreamers from deportation and allowed them to stay and work in the United States.

It doesn't look like they are in agreement yet, but they are making progress. A legally allowable DACA for tighter border security.

It looks like major border security enhancements are the price Democrats will be expected to pay for DACA.

No deal yet, but the compromise will revolve around a more legalized DACA and much tighter Border Security.

Trump has been quoted very recently by reporters (within the last few hours) as stating openly that he is willing to work with Democrats on DACA, but the deal must involve what he calls "massive border security".

I liked Rand Paul's proposal that the Dreamers are allowed to remain legally but do not receive citizenship. Also their numbers subtract over several years the number od immigrants allowed to enter the USA...

No. We're letting them jump the line. I would say taking the deal has to have a cost - legal status for no citizenship for 25 years.

That's fair.

You aren't really good at this negotiating thing are you?

The Dems have the DREAM act in exchange for giving Trump the border security upgrades that Obama asked for in 2015. Done deal.

After that they will shore up ObamaCare in exchange for an infrastructure program. Then they give in to Trump's progressive tax plan that includes tax hikes on the richest 1% in return for keeping NAFTA as is.

He has to know that amnesty now means no additional security and no wall later.

That's always the game, "Amnesty now, and we'll secure the border later."

Well, once amnesty is through, the new flood is on - because they know another amnesty will be coming. The MSM and media will be out there claiming we need this flood of illegal (despite approaching 100 million unemployed/underemployed citizens) workers to do the work Americans won't do (legalized slavery, in other words), fleeing poverty, etc., etc., and call the wall "stupid" and border security "racist." Rinse and repeat.

The irony is the Dems had to start doing this in the 80s to replace all the potential voters they had and continue to kill in the womb.

That doesn't answer the real questions, is Trump a racist and are the Russians controlling him.

It's kind of a brilliant strategy really. Trump unilaterally got rid of DACA and now uses it as a bargaining chip.

Legislation restoring DACA isn't really a win for democrats. It just reverts back to where we already were but this time with strict border security in the form of actual legislation. So if accomplished, it's an overall win for the GOP and fixes a problem moving forward while not punishing those who are already here.

I can accept that. But border security better come first. Don't let them do the bait and switch like Tip did with Reagan and amnesty

The people who brought their illegal alien dependents should be deported with a 15 year waiting period before their "USA citizen" dependents can sponsor them for citizenship.

Someone in their family needs to face legal ramifications for breaking USA laws.

Because they're jumping the line. It's a slap in the face to everyone who followed the rules like suckers.

It also incentivizes the next wave - just get here - eventually you'll get amnesty, citizenship, all the fabulous door prizes, too.

You know who else agreed to tighter border security in exchange for amnesty? Reagan. The illegals and the dems got their amnesty and California, and we got fricked on border security. We are going to get fricked again if any amnesty comes before the border is secured.

Remember that thing called compromise that nobody even tries to do anymore? That's what this is. We'd all be better off if we were willing to bend on more issues like this.

No Dem or Repub will love this deal but its manageable for both parties, and at this point, I'll take that.

i'm glad you came to this conclusion based on armchair analysis. i would take you so badly.

anyway, the point is that trump would be giving up something permanent for something decidedly not.

also what's lost in this is that trump isn't a member of the legislative branch of government.
