It's pretty cringeworthy IMO but I think he has some strategy behind it. As the pompous MSM derides him and acts snarky about the term, normal Americans will recoil at their elitism because obviously the terrorists are in fact "losers".
Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I kind of get Trump and his methods by this point.

He said it during his remarks last night with a reference to "I am going to start calling them losers, because that is what they are" or something along those lines.
Part of his branding of the opposition along the same lines as Crooked, Little and Lyin'. MSM is gonna MSM. Folks out here get it and the MSM will look stupid in questioning whether it is "smart", "mean spirited", "racist" or "hateful" to call the terrorists "losers."
