Trump Inaugaration TV Ratings

Nielsen ratings over last 47 years
Some highlights include (most were during the week):
Obama term 2 drew 20.5 million viewers
Obama term 1 drew 37.7 million viewers
GWB term 2 drew 15.5 million viewers (the lowest in the last 47 years)
GWB term 1 drew 29 million viewers
Clinton term 1 drew 29.7 million viewers
Reagan term 1 drew 41.8 million viewers
Given the fact that many people are starting to cut the cord, drawing this size crowd on TV is pretty good especially considering how the fake news networks tell us how hated Trump is.

The ones that weren't watching online were busy working.

I can see this crowd thing is a source of anxiety for some.
Kind of amazing how much more engaged the public used to be looking at Reagan, Carter, and Nixon's numbers 30-40 years ago. I know some have cut the cord, but the population was significantly lower then.

I cut the cord 10 years ago...
BTW.. Great to see you again.

Not sure how these things are calculated. I watched intermittently while I was teaching...I know...online. How would watching CNN Live be tabulated?

quote:Copy. I alluded to cutting the cord. But there were over 100 million fewer people back then. I think the population was more engaged.

I hope you don't think I have anxiety over this. I just saw the numbers, as it was pointed out to me, and was passing it along. I was merely trying to give everyone info along with a tad bit of opinion.

This isn't a necessary caveat and probably isn't true. There are certainly more TV sets than in 1981. Ronald was inaugurated on a Tuesday.
The numbers were fine. No need sugarcoat them in the slightest.

Who cares. We should go with Dick size.

quote:No clue. I think people used to have a lot more respect for our offices and institutions. I remember reading something years ago about how presidential Oval Office addresses used to be huge family events in which everyone stopped what they were doing and gathered around the TV. Now it's more or less passe.

They are calculated by checking a few people who volunteer to have black boxes installed on their television sets to monitor their viewing habits and then extrapolating that across the population.
It is likely that Nielsen ratings are as accurate as Nate Silver in the current year.

It was certainly more engaged. Political discussion was typically far more civil. The office of the president was generally respected, even by those in opposition. Large social movements and protests were to right actual injustices.
That era is part of the greatness that needs to return. Manufacturing, producing, innovating, engaging in civil political disocourse to chart a path to becoming the greatest country on earth.

Of course they were watching. The potential for police shooting people in the streets was not going to go unwatched.

I'm guessing the inauguration was on nearly every channel everyone had back in those days. You turned on the TV and you had to watch it.

Not Reagan. I had cable by then. Shitty 15 channel cable, but still.

I know that's the case by the 80s but I didn't feel like hashing out that in the post at 4 am.
