Sovereignty!!!

quote:

The Trump administration on Saturday rebuffed language in a free trade statement at a G20 meeting that would have opposed economic protectionism, The Washington Post reported.

The rejection of language stressing the importance of free and open trade and condemning protectionism signals a growing fissure between the U.S. and some of its key economic allies.

German officials reportedly urged Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to agree to include the free trade language in the G20's joint statement, but the former hedge fund manager refused to do so, marking a break from previous meetings in which such language was adopted.

I like free trade. I really do.

But a little challenge and competition to the status quo is always healthy and good for everybody. If Free trade is so good for everybody, surely it will thrive and innovate on its own merits and prove the Trump administration wrong.

Echo chambers need competition and dissent lest they become stale and lethargic.

If this is just an academic exercise in pushing back on this stuff, fine whatever it doesn't matter.

America has, on the whole, greatly benefited from free trade. The EU, for all the issues it has, creating a free market for goods and services in Europe has largely been a good thing for them.

I don't want to see that go away.

God Emperor Trump has been waiting 30 years to fix our trade agreements.

It's amazing how quick "I'm a libertarian but I'd like juuuuust a bit more racism" becomes "TRUMP IS THE WAY AND THE LIGHT"

free trade is great as long as everybody is playing on a level playing field, think of a football game that has a 30 degree rise from one end zone to the other, if one team got to play down hill on both offense and defense that would give them a huge advantage. For far too many years American business have had an unfair uphill battle.

Which is why the biggest companies in the world are still overwhelmingly us based, right?

Right.

I agree.

Free trade is something that really made the 80s and 90s the best decades in American history and brought the United States to status as a global superpower and it should never ever go away but that doesn't mean its above reproach and it being a long time ago.

Ideas, long standing beliefs and economic theories as big as free trade need to be challenged at least once a generation to show the validity of their worth and inherent value. Trump will be good for free trade because he will challenge its supporters to prove him wrong and I honestly couldn't be more happy with this debate.

Protectionism vs Free Trade. I'm really looking forward to see how this play out in the Trump era. One of them is going to win.
