With completely different contexts and history for black people and white people. And that matters.

Neither Sterling's case nor that of this dumbass police official supports your hyperbole.

Sterling was in his home and had his conversation illegally (against California law) recorded.

Do you ever pay attention to actual facts instead of simply spewing your wild-eyed liberal fantasies?

have to repeat this every so often for the slow ones. Personally, I think it's unfortunate for black people to use the N word. However, it is absolutely NOT the same thing as a white person using it. If someone can discern the difference, that person is just plain dumb or willfully ignorant on the subject.

To some extent it's the same as a woman calling another woman a derogatory name or a gay person, or Cajun or Italian or Polish or even elderly. The connotation is not the same when used by someone outside the group.

With blacks it's even worse because the N-word comes from a time not only when it was used to ridicule (like other derogatory terms for other groups) but piggybacked with the force of Jim Crow. A time when thought blacks were inferior but treated them, by force of law, that way.

Anyone who can see this is willfully obtuse or intellectually limited.

Completely different contexts? Really?

White people can't even say or type out the n-word when talking about whether or not to use the n-word, or how it was used historically. And if it is established you said it once, perhaps in anger (not justifying it), in the 70s, you're a racist FOREVER and are not fit for employment.

You're still defending this speech/thought police?

I don't judge or treat people based on immutable characteristics outside that person's control. However, to pretend that there is ANYTHING like common sense or logic surrounding the use of this word is to ignore the last 25 years and the rise of political correctness.

The word is insignificant. While it can be used as a weapon - MANY words can be. The reason it is popular in hip-hop and among African American athletes (as well as other groups), is that they have co-opted the word in an effort to deprive whites of the power in using it. That's where it should have stopped.

But when you censor speech, you're attacking thought. And you're ascribing an intent to a person that should not be presumed by the mere utterance.

Watch the South Park episodes "With Apologies to Jesse Jackson" and "The F-word" - those are brilliant examples of what I'm talking about.

Huh? Yes I'm aware of the facts. They don't support your hyperbolic statement regarding free speech.

Monica Lewinsky was at home and had her conversation illegally (against Maryland law) recorded when she told Linda Tripp about the blue dress. And Tripp was criminally charged. That certainly didn't stop Kenneth Starr from using the tape to build his case against Clinton.

I certainly don't recall any righty arguing that the tape should be suppressed.

Personally I could give two shits but if I'm black and an employee of or a business associate of someone who clearly has animosity towards black people, any actions of the guy will be suspect. Here's a league and team made up of a clear majority of black people and you have an owner caught on tape saying he doesn't want someone bringing black people in his box, and you can't see how that's a problem?

ETA: I posted in the wrong thread! ok that's a sign it's time to sign off!

Have a good weekend folks!

Free speech is only hyperbole to liberals.

Any infringement of free speech not designed to physically injure others (FIRE! in a crowded theater) should be met with disdain.

I don't even get why this is a national news story. Okay, so an 80 year old guy used the "n-word". Fire up the presses.

So by now you've had the opportunity to express disdain for those who believe Michael Sam was wrong for the kiss on national tv and espn was wrong for showing it. Odd though, I checked your history and I see no such posts. Freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of speech!

So.... When do you defend gays like you're defending racists?

The man is an elected official who receives tax dollars for his salary and benefits and expenses. I think it is reasonable that the people of the town hold him to a higher standard in public. This is not about PC. People have objected to that word a long time before PC became the vogue.

His age is no excuse. He knows that the times have changed and that elected officials can expect people to be angry when he uses that word in public to describe the president of the US.
