But how do we divorce when we are divided urban and suburban?

I do not think so. I think what you are seeing the last breaths of the hippie/commune people desperately trying to make that major change before they fade away into memory. Trump may be the last boomer that fixes a lot of what their generation messed up.

This. However, I would absolutely support a constitutional amendment providing terms for peaceful, legal secession. There would be some on both sides who would agree such an amendment today. I think treating CA, OR, and WA like a close neighbor is an extreme but workable option. We could have friendly relations, visa waivers, uninhibited trade, etc. They would presumably copy 90% of the federal statutes of the old USA and probably stick to the dollar out of convenience. There would be huge consequences and problems with such a move, but the people living on both sides of the border would be a little more free to have the kind of country they want. I would not, however, consent to letting them keep the military bases in their states.
