LONDON (AP) — Iceland will be the first country in the world to make employers prove they offer equal pay regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality, the Nordic nation's government said Wednesday — International Women's Day.

The government said it will introduce legislation to parliament this month, requiring all employers with more than 25 staff to obtain certification to prove they give equal pay for work of equal value.

While other countries, and the U.S. state of Minnesota, have equal-salary certificate policies, Iceland is thought to be the first to make it mandatory for both private and public firms.

If they do this, they should find there is no problem, that that 70 cents to a dollar meme was #fakenews and their legislation was an unnecessary added business cost.

So no raises or bonuses based on years with the organization or any other type of loyalty?

If so, that's ridiculous.

If a company wants to reward loyalty to retain good employees, that should be their prerogative, and certainly none of the government's business.

I would like to see how they define value

value is something entirely too subjective to legislate

It is. This law is going to be a shitshow to try and enforce.

What they will find is that women are more likely to go into fields which offer less pay than do men.

Well, it'll be interesting to see them measure/enforce that principle.

This.

They have 300,000 citizens. Baton Rouge is bigger than them. If they establish some whackado policy, that's on them.

I just don't want to hear "it worked for the 300k citizens of Iceland, so it can work for the 320m citizens in the US!"

How many people will have to take a paycut to balance out payrolls?

Lol. You know we'll hear it eventually.

Progressives love to tell us how "far behind" the EU countries we are.

Never mind the fact that disparate pay based on gender has been illegal in the U.S. since 1964.

Iceland has the population of a city like Baton Rouge, and pretty evenly split between male female. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

I've read a study saying that the disparity between men and women in their first few years of work, when adjusted for profession and education, is closer to 5-7%. Not terrible, but a statistically real disparity. It might be explained by a difference in willingness to negotiate a salary. I believe there's evidence showing that men are more likely to negotiate than women.

I got these figures from something published by the AAUW, a women's advocacy group. So probably not biased against women.

I don't remember the title of what I read, otherwise I'd link it. Here's the AAUW website though.

Not if they establish a government agency of "unbiased" "experts" to determine "discrimination".

This is what happens when a government has nothing else to worry about besides the occasional volcano with an unpronounceable name.
