U.S. employers added a robust 235,000 jobs in February and raised pay at a healthy pace, making it all but certain that the Federal Reserve will raise short-term interest rates next week.

Friday's jobs report from the government made clear that the economy remains on solid footing nearly eight years after the Great Recession ended.

The unemployment rate dipped to a low 4.7 percent from 4.8 percent, the Labor Department said. More people began looking for jobs in February, a sign of confidence that raised the proportion of Americans working or seeking work to the highest level in nearly a year.

The gains in hiring and pay, along with higher consumer and business confidence since the November election, could lift spending and investment in coming months and accelerate economic growth. Americans are buying homes at a solid pace, and manufacturing is rebounding, in part because of improving economies overseas.

U.S. builders are breaking ground on more homes, and factory production has recovered from an 18-month slump, fueling growth and hiring. In February, manufacturing expanded at the fastest pace in more than two years, according to a trade group. Businesses have stepped up their purchases of industrial equipment, steel and other metals, and computers.

And in January, Americans bought homes at the fastest pace in a decade despite higher mortgage rates. That demand has spurred a 10.5 percent increase in home construction in the past 12 months.

Friday's report was the first to cover a full month under President Donald Trump. During the presidential campaign, Trump had cast doubt on the validity of the government's jobs data, calling the unemployment rate a "hoax." But just minutes after Friday's report was released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, Trump retweeted a news report touting the job growth.

An array of evidence suggests that the U.S. job market is fundamentally healthy or nearly so. Hiring over the past two months has averaged 237,000, up from last year's monthly average of 187,000.

The number of people seeking first-time unemployment benefits — a rough proxy for the pace of layoffs — reached a 44-year low two weeks ago.

Business confidence has risen since the presidential election, with many business executives saying they expect faster economic growth to result from Trump's promised tax cuts, deregulation and infrastructure spending.

Yes, thank you Mr. President

Job expansion at the same rate for the last 78 months now. Just continuing what Obama was doing. It's like one of the only things Obama did right during his presidency so Trump can't take credit for it.

Are we going to get any of the deep, critical examination of these numbers as we saw prior to Jan 20?

According to MORNING BLOW these aren't Trump's jobs to claim. Rather they are the result of hiring decisions done in November -December of last year.

Trump could literally walk on water and the response would be: "Trump can't swim"

frick them all

Surprised those asshats haven't started reporting the number of jobs lost during that time. That will be next on their agenda in order to make it look as Trump's fault.

50,000 jobs/month added in Jan & Feb of 2017 than Jan & Feb of 2016.

Of course, President Obama came into office as the economy was plunging into a recession (a plunge that also drags down George W. Bush's number). But even if you average out Obama's 75 straight months of job growth, you get 199,000 jobs per month,

38,000 more than Obama's monthly average.

US adds 156,000 jobs in Dec 2016 but less than expected
US adds 178,000 jobs in Nov 2016
US adds 161,000 jobs in October 2016; fewer than expected
US adds 156,000 jobs in September 2016
US adds 151,000 jobs in august 2016; 30,000 jobs fewer than expected
US adds 255,000 jobs in July 2016, ~70,000 more than expected
US adds 287,000 jobs in June 2016; ~90,000 more than expected
US created 38,000 jobs in May 2016, ~120,000 less than expected
US adds 160,000 jobs in April 2016; fewer than expected
US adds 215,000 jobs in March 2016; more than expected

The US added a lot of jobs under Obama, but we haven't had the "lower than expected" phrase under Pres Trump.

What policies did Trump enact that created these jobs?

Every time we posted 200,000 jobs under Obama, this board would complain about fake numbers, or too many part-time jobs, or not adding jobs fast enough.

Now, a similar report is hailed as a massive success by Trump.

It's amazing to watch you guys in action.

So how long into Trump's tenure before you actually might give him a nod for better economics for the country? Three years, 11 months and 29 days sound about right?

Based on the links you posted, there's an equal number of "more than expected" as there are "less than expected"

And it's only been one month under Trump. And let's be honest--he hasn't enacted any policies yet that would affect job growth.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to decry the labor participation rate.
