My bad, considering the thread title, I honestly thought you were citing McCarthyism as having led to people being political prisoners.
Had I known you intended to go after the House Un-American Activities Committee (which was created before McCarthy and which McCarthy was never a member) led largely by Democrat Chairmen who held these people in contempt, I would have mentioned the same thing.
But isn't the real reason they refused to testify because it would expose them to perjury charges after having previously testified in California? They were not heroes. They were avoiding a more serious felony conviction.

I do know that is what someone should do. In this case that is what Stefan is doing. It is what Trump is doing. But if I do what the nearly mainstream guys are doing then what am I really needed for? I am here to push the overton window further and help people realize they've been lied to for a long time. You will just have to be the counterbalance still further right but not as far right if I tilt too far.
