A rather long read but well worth your time

I guess the Pope likes the society communism and socialism has created in many Latin American countries.

The Catholic Church as a body has no incentive to lift its parishioners out of poverty. In Latin American countries, the church is central in filling the void left by Socialist and Communist governments, especially as it relates to social programs. If you wind up with a laissez faire economy and a growing middle class, the church loses its sphere of influence, despite having a government more friendly to its aims.

Why would anyone be surprised?

Pope: 'It's your duty to take care of your neighbor.'

Libertarian: 'It's my neighbor's duty to take care of his own damn self.'

Yeah, but can't you also say that when government fills the role of the church, at some point the government may rightfully decide the church is unnecessary?

It's just another way for these Protestant heretics to attack the Catholic Church. While I disagree with Pope Francis on many political subjects, I can't argue with the logic expressed in the quoted above. Jesus's message was to help your neighbor. The libertarian's message is let my neighbor help himself.

I've never heard a libertarian say that.

I've heard libertarians say that personal responsibility and autonomy are highly important, and that it's not the government's responsibility to look after you.

That has nothing to do with your responsibility to look after your neighbors.

The church and individuals should care for other people in their community. The problem I have is when the church (Catholic or protestant) blur the lines like you just did, and try to put a social responsibility on the government's to-do list.

So you have a problem with a church when it's trying to do its job? Okay. Got you.

The libertarians I know give a lot of money to charity. The message of Jesus was that you should personally help others, not take money from others to do your good deeds for you. Socialism and communism is also by nature against religion as well and opposes church based charity.

There is nothing noble or generous about taking the money of others to redistribute it.

It's the church's job to promote the government taking on responsibility for the welfare of individuals? It may be in Catholicism (I'm not Catholic), but I've never heard that, and would certainly disagree with it if so.

Wrong. The libertarian value system is based on freedom. The word 'responsibility' is anti-freedom. It's coercive and we reject it.
As a libertarian I am 'free' to look after my neighbor. It is my choice made out of free will.
It is not my 'responsibility' to look after him. That = a duty which does not come from free will.

I'm Catholic, can confirm that I despise him. Like really, really despise him. I won't set foot in mass again until he's no longer pope, however long that takes. Having the fricking Pope of all people turn into a liberal Muslim apologist is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my life

I guess Jesus telling his apostles to make disciples of all nations in Matthew's gospel wasn't meant to be taken literally?
