Lawmakers lining up behind bill to bring four-day work week to America

quote:

Takano first introduced the measure in July, which reportedly garnered endorsements from several labor unions. The bill would not eliminate 40-work weeks altogether, but it will require employers to offer employees overtime pay after 32 hours.

Yeah, this will help the cost of goods

Companies can't find workers as is, add in now having to pay overtime to offset and the cost will be offset on the consumer.

Might as well just say it's dead on arrival.

So, essentially, it will eliminate 40-hour work weeks for anyone making an hourly wage.

I support this, but not as law. Nothing is stopping companies from enacting this now, let a few companies pilot and let the labor market decide.

As technology has increased (email, cell phones, etc.) our productivity has directly increased as well. That being said, the increase in efficiency should have led to a decrease in the work week but in reality the work week has inversely increased to where most are expected to work well beyond 40 hours a week since you can now reach anyone, anytime basically.

That's a HORRIBLE idea and will bring us down to the level of productivity of Europe...maybe that's the intent.

This is the French system.

Normal people end up working two jobs, to make ends meet.

Overall it’s a disaster.

Taxes are incredibly high, pay is bad, and take home pay is worse.

Because it’s so hard to fire people, the French are very careful about who they hire. So finding a job is unpleasant.

Salaried Non-Exempt checking in. Guess we are still slaves to the boss man either way.

I don't know what it should be but the work week does need to be revisited. With technology, there really is no reason to be working five of seven days each week in an office role.

I personally think it should just be prodcution driven. "Here is your stack of work to get through. Here is your deadline. Work to get it finished."

Im fine with that, if we can lower salaried employees pay.

Say you make 50k a year. You are making $24/hr for 40 hours.

So your salary should drop to 40k a year.

The number of people averse to work is just amazing.

I'll do a four-day work week. But it's going to have to be four 10-hour days.

So, this would just encourage employers to terminate full time employees and move to all part time and temp jobs. Brilliant plan if you are trying to ruin everybody's life.

Hard to be selective about who you hire when you are forced by the government to hire according to their demographics.

Why, you pay for their skill set and their results not for how long they hang out at your office. An employee that can get 40 hours done in 32 is more valuable than an employee who needs 40 to get the same results. You ever heard the story of the old man who whacked a piece of equipment with a hammer and got it running in 10 min vs the four guys you paid several hours with no results. That old guy is more valuable bc he knows where to whack it with the hammer.
