It's going to take a while to go from that to irrelevant.
Where did I say it was going to happen anytime soon? It was a question (not hypothetical because it WILL happen eventually) that elicited discussion and we are.

We will have a movement for a large part of the country to secede. They will win the battle, and the US will crumble as a result.
Its going to be a painful time. And its either going to be the south or the west that breaks off, depending on whether we move towards to theocratic or technocratic state.

Maybe you can add a coop to that list. Yes a coop by Obama to unseat himself. That way he gets rid of a president and takes over the country as a dictator. Who knows what a guy who learned from a dad from a third world would go to accomplish a life long dream for old papa?

Rome is the greatest empire to have ever existed. IMO

The south will split into theocracy?

We are 18 trillion in debt. You can't operate like that and continue to sustain yourself.

No. you aren't very smart are you?
If the nation becomes more theocratic the west will break away. If it becomes more technocratic, the south will break away.

Well we in debt for something we can print. Yes the consequences of printing our way out are very dire but the consequence of defaulting are much more serious.

Gee thanks.
But I'm not a moron who suggest a theocratic state. Its a boogyman for little kids.
Jerry Falwell still scare you?
I believe Miley Cyrus would rule before what you suggest.
Thats how stupid I think your idea is.

It's the second highest debt to GDP ratio we've ever had. We can manage. Japan, Germany, and the UK survived with external debts well above their GDPs for decades. We're just below that 100% threshhold only when including the 6T in debt the government owes itself.

Financial melt down, debt makes the buoyance of America tilt and then our financial melt down takes down the whole world.
The rest of the world never trusts America gain and abandon the U.S. Dollar.
The USA, youth, elderly ad all workers turn against the idiot liberals who have spent us into oblivion, along with the press who used strong arm tactics like SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT every time the Republicans tried to act responsibly.
When these geek, pinheaded youth are standing in a soup line they will then learn the values of our forefathers and the greatest generation of world war 2.
Liberal thought will be shunned, the pro immigration, pro spending on lazy bastards, will be blamed and flogged by a NEWLY FORMED PRESS, and liberalism will be dead.

Actually, the consequences are almost the same. If we devalue the currency by rampant printing to pay off debt, then foreign debt holders (namely, the Chinese holding over 2.5 trillion in US debt) would likely consider this an act of war (depending on the scale and degree we print of course). Its really too complicated to explain on a message board, but suffice to say this would wreck the Chinese economy.
A default on the other hand would have to be further defined in order to outline what the consequences would be. If we defaulted on government function outlays, then no, its not as serious. Very bad, but not world changing. If we defaulted on existing debt (particularly foreign holdings) then yes, it would probably start a world war.

but the debt is still growing and will become unsustainable or do we just say frick it and zero it out?
How you going to pay for Social Security? That's where most of that debt is.
But the unfunded liability number DWARFS the public debt - $90 trillion makes $18 trillion look manageable.

SS and Medicare will be dramatically restructured within the next few decades. We throw words like "unsustainable" around so much that it's been cheapened, but the current system is absolutely unsustainable. We're also going to have to take another stab at controlling the growth of healthcare costs. I don't know what those solutions may look like, but I expect people retiring in their early late 50s/early 60s will be a memory in no time flat.
