Not only do they have an inability to assess themselves, but also the inability to assess their political enemies. They assume everyone not them is a dumb Nazi prole on the wrong side of history that votes against their own interest. Fail to accurately assess your idealogical opponents at your own peril.
Also, part of the reason for violence is that regular people are no longer buying their bullshite anymore. They have nothing left but to impose their beliefs through violent means.

What's happened is the crazies have hijacked the party and its leadership causing former centrists still in power to move left to cater to fringe groups.
It's caused a credibility problem where even if they run a centrist voters don't believe they will vote centrist rather than party line.
Dems won't win by moving more left. They need to replace their entire leadership with centrists and the entire party platform to more centrist, particularly with fiscal issues and drop the social division crap.
