this seems like it's going to be the next boondoggle of our government. i anticipate that it's going to hit the rounds hard this week on alternative media (it's already on info wars via zero hedge)

Zero Hedge (take it with a ZH grain of salt)

quote:

Long before the "fake news" meme became a daily topic of extensive conversation on such discredited mainstream portals as CNN and WaPo, H.R. 5181 would task the Secretary of State with coordinating the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to “establish a Center for Information Analysis and Response,” which will pinpoint sources of disinformation, analyze data, and — in true dystopic manner — ‘develop and disseminate’ “fact-based narratives” to counter effrontery propaganda.

In short, long before "fake news" became a major media topic, the US government was already planning its legally-backed crackdown on anything it would eventually label "fake news."

quote:

...while the US media has indoctrinated the public to assume that any information which is not in compliance with the official government narrative, or dares to criticize the establishment, is also "fake news" and thus falls under the "Russian propaganda" umbrella, the scene is now set for the US government to legally crack down on every media outlet that the government deems to be "foreign propaganda."

This is the official press release

quote:

“Our enemies are using foreign propaganda and disinformation against us and our allies, and so far the U.S. government has been asleep at the wheel,” Portman said. “But today, the United States has taken a critical step towards confronting the extensive, and destabilizing, foreign propaganda and disinformation operations being waged against us by our enemies overseas. With this bill now law, we are finally signaling that enough is enough; the United States will no longer sit on the sidelines. We are going to confront this threat head-on. I am confident that, with the help of this bipartisan bill, the disinformation and propaganda used against us, our allies, and our interests will fail.”

quote:

The first priority is developing a whole-of-government strategy for countering THE foreign propaganda and disinformation being wages against us and our allies by our enemies. The bill would increase the authority, resources, and mandate of the Global Engagement Center to include state actors like Russia and China as well as non-state actors. The Center will be led by the State Department, but with the active senior level participation of the Department of Defense, USAID, the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the Intelligence Community, and other relevant agencies. The Center will develop, integrate, and synchronize whole-of-government initiatives to expose and counter foreign disinformation operations by our enemies and proactively advance fact-based narratives that support U.S. allies and interests.

I read that this morning but looked for more credible sources and couldn't find any.

It's really scary if it is true. It will make for strange times if true.

Sounds like the government is getting into the media business. Perhaps they should be encouraging the MSM to do this kind of work like they are supposed to.

Its all a game. Most of the shite we see on msm is an attempt to distract from any attempt at real news.

It would truly be refreshing to see a news site that just stated facts that would allow me to determine my own opinion on the topic.

Any one have a site thats not left or right or biased at all that they could recommend?

We don't need this need this.

Trump already has Twitter, and it's free.

As you highlighted the non-state actors part which is the important part. Government could come after a lot of people if they wanted. The /pol/s are talking about it.

Actually looks pretty close to some of the same functions performed by the former US Information Agency that was shuttered after the Cold War.

A positive development IMO. Good to see the bipartisan support. I guess we'll have to see if it can be effective.

Btw linking to Zerohedge was nicely ironic considering the subject matter.

the fact that this is attached to the NDAA shows the terrors of "bipartisan support"

please describe how you would define this

what do you hope this law actually does? how will it accomplish that goal?

i clearly said that this was making the rounds on alternative media and even added a qualifier

i also posted the official press release to balance that out

It could start by countering the false information trafficked by some of these "alternative media" you refer to that just rehash RT.com & Sputnik content.

I imagine they will start off being pretty slow moving to be effective but it seems to be a step in the right direction.

As to whether the new administration will put undue influence on its operation I guess we'll have to see. Hoping for the best though.

how?

why don't we let the market sort this one out? why do we need government interjecting itself?

moving to be effective

again, what would be "effective" to you? specifically

your'e speaking in these broad terms and i'm asking for specifics of your personal opinion/desires
