The request is tied to racial justice issues
This situation is very similar to issues in Cleveland and Washington D.C. -- which have used the terms “Indians” and “Redskins” for their professional sports franchises. However, the Washington Football Team has officially dropped the moniker, and Cleveland seems poised to follow suit.

Chief Hoskin alluded to the mainstreaming of racial justice concepts following the Black Lives Matter protests last summer.

"I think we're in a day and age in this country where it’s time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general," he said in his statement.

Any suggestions for the new name once Jeep caves? I’m leaning towards “Cuckold” and “Grand Cuckold”.

I guess the Jeep crap during the Super Bowl didn't work for them.

The thing that I don’t understand with this genre of controversy is that, Jeep, and other entities like them that use Native American words, are doing so in a positive way. They wouldn’t name their car something that they believed created/perpetuated negative image. It’s like “hey Cherokee ala badass.” But maybe I am missing something.

I somewhat agree with the premise, if everyone else is jumping on racial issues and freaking out over nothing, well... the indians have quite a bit more of a greivance to fill than anyone.

Still doesn't mean they HAVE to, but if everyone else is demanding racial "equality" and other bullshite then they certainly have the right to as well - probably more than any other race.

But when it comes to the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, they're named that in an attempt to convey "toughness" and their ability to handle "the wilderness". Their supposed free spirit, too.

I'll never understand why any one person or race would have a problem with enforcing a positive stereotype, it's a GOOD thing. But if anyone can really bitch about western civilization appropriating their culture or racism, it's the native Americans.

For the record, I think Jeep products are pure shite.

This is the kind of thing I would have had more sympathy for 50-100 years ago.

What about Blackhawk, Apache, Kiowa, and Iroquois after whom some really badass military helicopters are named after. Are those next? To me it’s be an honor to have something like this named due in large part to honor the legacy of your ancestors. Hell, change it from the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter to the AH-64 Cajun attack helicopter and I’d be honored!

So, the Cherokee let them use the name and now want it back.

If only there was a term for giving someone something and then taking it back.

Native American words

WAIT - since when is Jeep a Native American word???

I have watched a lot of cowboy Indian movies and never heard the word Jeep once.

I have never heard of an Indian warrior named Jeep.

The word Jeep was coined when I was an adolescent - it comes from the General Purpose vehicles that were introduced in WWII for out troops in Europe. They were called GPs which the soldiers reduced to "jeep" - I think there may have been some cartoon character at that time named Jeep, but I never saw it.

Jeeps are 4 wd utility vehicles that were just very popular - especially back in the early 50s when you could buy one for 50 bucks - it came in a box and you had to assemble it. Sure wish I'd had 50 bucks back then.

It's like the MA deuce = should mothers be offended>?

All this bullshite drives me crazy

eta - oh hell. they are talking about the Cherokee, not the "jeep" - dumbass me.

It still drives me nutz tho.

eta2 - as was plain in the title
