The best Op-Ed I've seen on Ferguson

Politico: Rich Lowry
He sums it up nicely. I recommend you just read the whole thing, but here are excerpts:
He sums it up nicely. I recommend you just read the whole thing, but here are excerpts:
quote:
The bitter irony of the Michael Brown case is that if he had actually put his hands up and said don't shoot, he would almost certainly be alive today. His family would have been spared an unspeakable loss, and Ferguson, Missouri wouldn't have experienced multiple bouts of rioting, including the torching of at least a dozen businesses the night it was announced that Officer Darren Wilson wouldn't be charged with a crime.
Instead, the credible evidence (i.e., the testimony that doesn't contradict itself or the physical evidence) suggests that Michael Brown had no interest in surrendering. After committing an act of petty robbery at a local business, he attacked Officer Wilson when he stopped him on the street. Brown punched Wilson when the officer was still in his patrol car and attempted to take his gun from him.
The first shots were fired within the car in the struggle over the gun. Then, Michael Brown ran. Even if he hadn't put his hands up, but merely kept running away, he would also almost certainly be alive today. Again, according to the credible evidence, he turned back and rushed Wilson. The officer shot several times, but Brown kept on coming until Wilson killed him.
This is a terrible tragedy. It isn't a metaphor for police brutality or race repression or anything else, and never was. Aided and abetted by a compliant national media, the Ferguson protestors spun a dishonest or misinformed version of what happened—Michael Brown murdered in cold blood while trying to give up—into a chant ("hands up, don't shoot") and then a mini-movement.
When the facts didn't back their narrative, they dismissed the facts and retreated into paranoid suspicion of the legal system. It apparently required more intellectual effort than almost any liberal could muster even to say, "You know, I believe policing in America is deeply unjust, but in this case the evidence is murky and not enough to indict, let alone convict anyone of a crime."
quote:
Liberal commentators come back again and again to the fact that Michael Brown was unarmed and that, in the struggle between the two, Officer Wilson only sustained bruises to his face, or what Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo calls an "irritated cheek." The subtext is that if only Wilson had allowed Brown to beat him up and perhaps take his gun, things wouldn't have had to escalate.

Very well stated. But a faction of this country is out for blood, regardless of the facts.

Things will probably calm down in Ferguson when the rioters read their copy of politico today.
Seriously, it was a well reasoned article

Really well done. Enjoyed reading that. Agree with everything.

Sad....but true. No matter the evidence, the short term holds nothing but hatred and contempt for the "system".

This whole sh!t show is about the Rev-uh-runds Al and Jesse. Jesse needs a new summer home on Martha's Vinyard so he can hang out with Billy Jeff and Billary. Al needs a couple million to get the IRS off his a$$.
That is ALL this is about.
That is ALL this is about.

Really a shame it's come down to white/black...liberal/conservative. It seems a very large percentage of people have empathy for only those who tend to align themselves politically. I'm really getting burned out on politics for this very reason.
I know it's not just me, but politics has become such a caricature, so dumbed-down and people hate the other guy more than they actually believe in their own "side."

Obama and Holder disagree with this.
The rest of us who have half a brain would most certainly agree with this.

The fact of the matter is Michael Brown's conduct tipped the dominoes into action when he chose to commit robbery...without that choice we would have nothing to consider. This matter is about race only for those who choose to make it about race as they refuse to call lawlessness - lawlessness and this lack of courage to do so lies at the core of the matter before us. Poverty, race and the likes are simply excuses for the intellectually dishonest as there are countless examples of others who have overcome far worse and they lead honorable and noble lives. Further, precious few of us have never encountered some degree of bigotry, whether it be race, ethnicity, gender, religious, etc., and to allow others to define one's own sense of self is a sure fire way to never realize a reasonable life in America.

This Ferguson crap will be over when the next faux outrage occurs. I cannot believe how many educated people of color are jumping all over this race baiting.

I have a very liberal friend in Seattle and she's all over this. Very intelligent lady but surrounds herself with people who think exactly the way she thinks and her view of the world is skewed. She's convinced that if you don't vote for Obama, you're racist and that Michael Brown was surrendering when killed.

They should just shut up and accept the findings of the investigation.
Now who's up for another Benghazi investigation?

Yep, where is the outrage when the following occurs as outlined in Lowery's Op-Ed?
I presume the offender was caught and dealt with, but don't know the outcome of this because why? Law enforcement needs our support, not unwavering idolatry, but benefit of the doubt. Hell, there isn't even doubt in the Michael Brown findings yet the overzealous race baiters and black apologists fall all over themselves to indict the system that protects them.
quote:
There is good reason for a police officer to be in mortal fear in the situation Officer Wilson faced, though. In upstate New York last March, a police officer responded to a disturbance call at an office, when suddenly a disturbed man pummeled the officer as he was attempting to exit his vehicle and then grabbed his gun and shot him dead. The case didn't become a national metaphor for anything.

This entire protest is based on lies.
At least Travon Martin had a real case and point. This guy attacked a cop and tried to steal his gun then ran away only to begin charging him?
Damn right you shoot to kill.
