Tesla to build factory in Shanghai
quote:

Electric-car maker Tesla Inc. TSLA -2.34% has reached an agreement to set up its own manufacturing facility in Shanghai, according to people briefed on the plan, a move that could help the company gain traction in China’s fast-growing EV market. The deal with Shanghai’s government will allow the Silicon Valley auto maker to build a wholly owned factory in the city’s free-trade zone, these people said. This arrangement, the first of its kind for a foreign auto maker, could enable Tesla to slash production costs, but it would still likely incur China’s 25% import tariff.

Tesla running out of US government money
quote:

"The uncertainty of tax rebates is still a big concern for Tesla reservation holders," Caldwell said in a report sent to CNBC. "Tesla appears to be prioritizing employees, investors and current Tesla owners for delivery of the Model 3, all while the company continues to sell the Model S and Model X, which will eat into Tesla's dwindling tax credits. It's still a big question whether the thousands of people in line to buy a Model 3 will be able to stomach the full price of the car without a hefty rebate."
No problem, just up and move production to China.

Tesla.

I've been laughing for a while at how liberals could mentally justify the government subsidizing luxury car sales.

ROFLMAO

I think the point is that Tesla is touted as a super PC company that the US govt HAD to invest in. Now it turns out they're just like every other company that will go to other countries to increase profit via lower wages and relaxed environmental laws.

I've never heard that. I think it is a very innovative, forward thinking company.

If I bought a Tesla (I'm not..just go with me here)..the Gov rebate is to ME!

The Gov has decided it wanted the "PC" low / no emission vehicles and they incentivize ME to buy one.

Now, YES. Tesla profits from the fact. But, the Gov is rebating to ME

He’s just moving to where they don’t complain about unsafe labor conditions baw. With Chinese near slave labor and no missed work due to injury, maybe Musk can finally meet production estimates.

Of course!

Everyone with at least half a brain could have seen this coming!

Sure, and that means it subsidizes the market and gives that company an unfair advantage.

When the most populated country on Earth pledgeScience to get rid of gas powered cars in 20 years, you make the move. In the US we are trying to build up our coal industry.

Well. Quite obviously that's still a Tesla subsidy

I don't hate Tesla. But let's stick in reality here

Elon Musk's growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies

quote:

Tesla Motors Inc., SolarCity Corp. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., known as SpaceX, together have benefited from an estimated $4.9 billion in government support
quote:

"He definitely goes where there is government money," said Dan Dolev, an analyst at Jefferies Equity Research. "That's a great strategy, but the government will cut you off one day."
quote:

The figure compiled by The Times comprises a variety of government incentives, including grants, tax breaks, factory construction, discounted loans and environmental credits that Tesla can sell.

My favorite part is reading about the poor working conditions at Tesla. Appears China more lax in those regards.

tesla poor working conditions

Get a load of this.

Tesla factory employees describe grueling work conditions where people pass out 'like a pancake'Julia Carrie Wong, The GuardianMay 18, 2017, 9:53 AM ETTeslaTesla's Fremont factory.

When Tesla bought a decommissioned car factory in Fremont, California, Elon Musk transformed the old-fashioned, unionized plant into a much-vaunted "factory of the future", where giant robots named after X-Men shape and fold sheets of metal inside a gleaming white mecca of advanced manufacturing.

The appetite for Musk's electric cars, and his promise to disrupt the carbon-reliant automobile industry, has helped Tesla's value exceed that of both Ford and, briefly, General Motors (GM). But some of the human workers who share the factory with their robotic counterparts complain of grueling work pressure they attribute to Musk's aggressive production goals, and sometimes life-changing injuries.

Ambulances have been called more than 100 times since 2014 for workers experiencing fainting spells, dizziness, seizures, abnormal breathing and chest pains, according to incident reports obtained by the Guardian. Hundreds more were called for injuries and other medical issue

That's because China needs the electricity for their new cars to come from somewhere - coal fired power plants. Surely you're not that daft.

Also overlooked here is that they will be building in China to sell in China. This is almost a requirement over there. The US market will still get cars built here.

this is an overblown story, which is typical.
