If you could swap the amount you pay in income taxes with tariffs would you prefer to do so or wouldn't care either way?

That has nothing to do with the power they create for DC.

That's fair. I was responding more broadly to their overall tariff differences, but yeah, the world security situation seem to have changed his position on those particular tariffs. There's still a huge difference between them on tariffs.

However you want to quantify it I'll probably have no qualms.

But it's not the power from DC. It's the direction of power. Power derived from income taxes are directed at you, U.S. citizens. Power derived from tariffs are directed at trading partners, foreigners.

Things worse than tariffs for consumers:
-Money printing
-Shutting down economy for a cold
-Excessive regulations
-Bureaucracy and red tape
-Illegal immigration
-Progressive income taxes
-Impeding oil production and refinery
-Lawlessness
-Lawfare against those with wrong opinions
-Government mandates

Could go on and on. Tariffs are a necessary evil because our own government has made it incredibly hard to manufacture things here.

No, they're directed at every industry that doesn't have the protective benefits of a tariff, then they hit the consumer with increased prices. You give congress/lobbyists the power to pick winners and losers.

There can be upsides to them as well, but we have to be honest about the cost.

I'm a capitalist, so I'm against Tariffs if R or D is behind them. Thomas Sowell is in my corner.

Yes I did.

This is because the Media is commenting on Trump's proposal for universal tariffs, not "keeping" or "adding to" the tariffs on China which everyone seems to be "OK" with.

Tariffs are great if the country you are placing the tariff on taxes imports. Personally I think that the US government should do what Tom Clancy does in one of his books. Pass the Trade Reform Act from Debt of Honor which makes US laws and practices on imports of a country mirror the laws and practices of that country. That way trade is fair. I would prefer free & fair trade but I will gladly take take fair trade with extra costs instead of free trade and American industry and workers getting f**ked over without lube.

There has been a long time tariff on imported sugar because Latin America has two growing season for cane and La. only one. Without the tariff I guess sugar would be cheaper. Is that good? IDK, our people are pretty damn obese now.

Make the govt feel good about themselves.

An objective truth.

Tariffs are when the government taxes the little guy, and tells him its for his own benefit.

Neither you, nor Thomas Sowell have owned a business that has to compete with China and their slave labor. Cheaper prices are great and all, and I sincerely wish tariffs were not needed, but the result is the death of domestic manufacturing and industry. And while this doesn't sound catastrophic to many, you don't even have to go to war with your primary trade partner to recognize that at some point the country that manufactures most of the shite you buy, owns you.

ETA: Look at the Plandemic. China creates the virus. China supplies most of our pharmaceuticals. China's influence over our government, the pharmaceutical industry, and the medical community, results in effective medicines being banned and doctors threatened with their licenses for prescribing it. China's power and influence over our government and economy has resulted in nobody even talking about punishing China for releasing a deadly virus upon the world. China's power and influence over the pharmaceutical companies had doctors and administrators choosing the government, it's protocols, it's mandates, and it's recommended treatments, over what was best for the American people.

Take China out of the equation. Now put a 10% tariff on all imported products.

Is that good for the country?

Good job supporting woke corporations, that help support immigration to fill these jobs because Americans will not work them.

All on the back of the American consumer. Sounds opposite of "American First."

Its the small business that will get squeezed, the Corporations have deep pockets.

Tariffs aimed at protecting American industry from being undercut by unregulated and subpar foreign alternatives are not always a net negative, even if they ultimately raise costs for the consumer.

Punitive tariffs on items and industries where US domestic production is not sufficient to meet demand are just moronic.

Is that good for the country?

How the hell do you take a country that the federal government has allowed to destroy our manufacturing industry out of the equation? How do you allow a country with billions of people to use tariffs to prevent our products from entering their markets, while allowing them to dominate your market with inferior products and slave labor?
