TALLADEGA -- A crowd of around 500 gathered on the historic square in Talladega at noon today to provide support and a message of unity for the Talladega College marching band’s participation in the presidential inauguration on Friday.
Residents young and old, black and white -- and even four-legged friends of the college, came together for the city’s special sendoff.
Six charter busses extended across North Street on the square to accommodate the 250-member band on its 1,460-mile round-trip. Talladega College and city officials were present, including Talladega College President Dr. Billy C. Hawkins, Talladega College Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Lisa Long, Talladega College Associate Vice President Walvid King, Mayor Jerry Cooper, City Manager Patrick Bryant, city council members David Street, Ricky Simpson and Dr. Horace Patterson.
“This turnout speaks for itself,” Hawkins said. “We are so thankful for all of the support the community has been giving. We are excited for the opportunity to make history, and are excited not only for the college, but the city of Talladega as well.”

Glad to see at least one college president has a spine.

that will be special for the kids.
would be awesome to have another HBC involved. do a battle of the bands during the parade.
if I ever become president I will demand that.
congrats to them.

"The Human Jukebox"..Southern Univ. Band vs. Grambling would be incredible. I've gone to the Bayou Classic just to see the bands; absolutely awesome!

HBCU bands are, hands down, the most entertaining. Talented people.

You probably have. They've performed at a Saints game.

They have been doing Mardi Gras parades for a few years now. They are fantastic. They are going to want serious bucks now that they are famous!

Band geeks unite.
I'm very happy for this marching band. I would have loved to have done this in high school or college band.
