Actually first started with Kip Holden as mayor. He along with the legislature tried to such this down.

Actually, it was then Senator Sharon Weston Broome and Yvonne Dorsey Colombe who told the organizers of the Southeast Baton Rouge Community School district and sen Bodi White that is was unheard of that a collection of neighborhoods have its own ISD, that it would be easier if they were already a city. So yeah it was her fault. She was the spark that lit the fire of St. George.

Over a new school district? No. Look for EBRPSS to argue this would be a civil rights violation and get an injunction. They have the right judges in the Middle District for it.

Governor appointed a school board for Central shortly after them winning their case against the city-parish. The new city with approximately 30k in population took over several schools that were formally part of the EBR school system.

There was no civil rights suit and no injunction that I’m aware of. Is this a thing, you mentioning this is the first I’ve heard it being suggested.

Again, I’m not sure how the parish would have standing in your scenario.

Not saying there would be merit to the claim. I just know that the same "keep what is mine" mindset that made the formation of the city a 13 year slog will underpin the EBRPSS' actions.

What??? How stupid can you be?

The St George movement began BEFORE Broome. It was happening wheter Broome was mayor or not.

Yes, Broome sued, but the St George movement is NOT 100% her fault and her fault alone.

Why waste the bullet until the LASC ruled for St George's incorporation?

I'm sure that bullet is being loaded, now.

I'm imagining the suit will involve claims of parish money/government power over minority citizens of the parish.

They can attack the law/process itself as violating various federal laws and the 14th Amendment.

Attack doesn't mean win, for the smoothbrains.

They pulled this bullet out during the vote on the COA years ago at the 11th hour of the vote. It cause the crucial vote to flip at the last second.

Not before her time as a state rep, right?

Broome’s actions while in the state legislature directly lead to the incorporation effort.

Correct. She was a State Senator when the organizing group went to the Legislature to get an ISD.

The COA won a close vote to allow them to collect a property tax. Exactly what 11th hour vote are you alluding to?

So it is 100% her fault because of her as a state senator? Because the claim was this it is 100% her fault and nobody else's.

The last, IIRC, person that spoke at the hearing prior to the vote dropped the lawsuit bomb. It caused the final vote to flip to support the COA tax.

What now?

No fleecing of tax payers by BR; low crime, laws actually enforced, criminals punished, and police given the green light to do their jobs without worrying about being called "racists;" good schools; halfway functional local government; a good way of life and a better place to live and raise a family than the incorporated City of Baton Rouge?

Helping kill funding of the ISD and opening her mouth to claim that an ISD needs a city sure started the ball rolling.

Combine that with her being fricking incompetent as mayor making the 2nd incorporation effort succeed and an awful lot of blame can be laid at her feet.

I understand the argument, just don't see it happening, seems like a huge reach.

Moreover, Ted James is going to defeat Broom in November and he appears to be more intelligent and practical. Why waste more tax money fighting the inevitable?

1. Because it is EBR tax money and not her personal stash, so she doesn’t mind spending it

2. If she doesn’t fight it tooth and nail, she loses tons of tax revenue that now goes to St George along with likely having to cough up five years of taxes retroactive to the incorporation.

That not only takes money out of her ability to spread around to buy votes, it puts a massive hole in BR’s budget that will have to be filled somehow.

She would rather fight a losing battle to keep that money than concede defeat, lose about $25-50m annually from the general fund, and have to cover all that BRPD and BRFD funding by cutting other costs in BR’s budget or raising taxes.

Is there a legitimate reason anyone outside of St. George is against this?

All I can get is that St. George leaving is "rAciSm" somehow

She's not going to be mayor after November.
