Semantics.

Greed leads people to act irresponsibly.

Irresponsability allows greed to take over actions.

If you don't think greed is a leading cause of our current sociatal crisis, then you haven't been paying attention.

When selecting sources of blame, it is more convincing to make the case that your source of blame happened to increase during the time frame where the change occurred. In the absence of that, blaming greed comes across as a rather simplistic tactic. Greed has been a pre- existing condition in every living creature.

If things suddenly got better, couldn't we just as easily credit greed?

But back to topic, yes. McCarthy was right. Our politicians of that era did us a disservice by focusing the public's attention on his character rather than his message.

There were communist agents working in the state department. There was in fact large scale communist infiltration and espionage. Declassified Soviet documents have shown that some of the people he accused of being communist spies were in fact communist spies.

It depends on what biography you read about J. McCarthy. His accusations were fed to him by the FBI. He seems to be a regular dirty politician that switched parties.

I can see why his concept can be applied to today.

Venona Project

quote:

The decrypted messages gave important insights into Soviet behavior in the period during which duplicate one-time pads were used. With the first break into the code, Venona revealed the existence of Soviet espionage[16] at Los Alamos National Laboratories.[17] Identities soon emerged of American, Canadian, Australian, and British spies in service to the Soviet government, including Klaus Fuchs, Alan Nunn May, and Donald Maclean. Others worked in Washington in the State Department, the Treasury, Office of Strategic Services,[18] and even the White House. The decrypts show the U.S. and other nations were targeted in major espionage campaigns by the Soviet Union as early as 1942. Among those identified are Julius and Ethel Rosenberg; Alger Hiss; Harry Dexter White,[19] the second-highest official in the Treasury Department; Lauchlin Currie,[20] a personal aide to Franklin Roosevelt; and Maurice Halperin,[21] a section head in the Office of Strategic Services.

Also, this is a link to the Appendix of Moynihan's book on the subject.

quote:

"Thanks to successful espionage, the Russians tested their first atom bomb in August 1949, just four years after the first American test. As will be discussed, we had learned of the Los Alamos spies in December 1946—December 20, to be precise. The US Army Security Agency, in the person of Meredith Knox Gardner, a genius in his own right, had broken one of what it termed the Venona messages—the transmissions that Soviet agents in the United States sent to and received from Moscow."

quote:

"KGB cables indicated that the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in World War II had been thoroughly infiltrated with Soviet agents."

re: Sen. J. McCarthy was right.
I suppose that depends on what you mean by "where we are now."

It's interesting that you pose this question--I am NOT well-read on this subject matter and plan to change that. Prior to about a week ago, I probably had the average person's view of McCarthy, propagated by the popular culture. I just happened to come across the term "operation mockingbird" (maybe on this board?), got curious, and did some surfing. From what i understand, because the CIA pulled out all the stops with the media they owned (basically, all if it) to discredit McCarthy, I don't think I can say that I (or any person who hasn't specifically studied McCarthy) can really say they understand anything about him except that he wanted to root out communism in America. Everything else has the stamp of bias on it. It really made me question in a broader sense if I truly KNOW what I think I know about the history of the 20th century. I don't just mean the slant our textbooks take but if the CIA had spent 30 or 40 years planting, skewing, and subverting the news, then is my information all disinformation? It was a disconcerting feeling.

J. Edgar Hoover and Joe McCarthy were far bigger threats to the country than the Russkies ever were.

It wasn't just thought. Many of the people accused were members of the CPUSA and/or worked closely with them.
