The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the SDF attacked the eastern edge of Raqqa and a military base on the northern outskirts of the city on Tuesday.

The attack on the al-Mashlab district and on the Division 17 base around 1km to the north of the city centre followed heavy overnight air raids, the observatory said.

The SDF has been working to encircle Raqqa since November in an offensive backed by the US-led coalition that is also fighting ISIL in Iraq, where the group is on the brink of defeat in the city of Mosul.

The US-led coalition has said 3,000 to 4,000 ISIL fighters are thought to be holed up in Raqqa city, where they have erected defences against the anticipated assault.

The US said on Tuesday it had started distributing arms to the YPG to help take Raqqa, part of a plan that has angered NATO-ally Turkey, which is worried by growing Kurdish influence in northern Syria.
I don't see Turkish soldiers encircling the ISIS capital so my controversial opinion is that Erdogan can suck it

Considering how many ISIS fighters came from or through Turkey, I think Turkey may be the ones being encircled.

Unfortunately, we'll likely abandon the Kurds again like we always do. They deserve their own country. I'm amazed that they still help us out at this point.

No doubt. Erdogan is probably watching Trump roll over for Saudi Arabia and planning his own sultan's welcome with all the bells and whistles and an even bigger, more sinister orb. Trump will have Gulen on a plane to Ankara by day 2 of his visit.

Kurds aren't the best people on earth either but they have a reason to fight against our enemies. Amazed Obama never armed the Kurds but once Putin got his claws in Erdogen things changed. I read Obama had plan ready for Trump to ark Kurds once he came into office.

They need to write off Turkey as a lost cause. After the alleged "coup", there's no turning back from the hardliners that have taken control.

Unnamed sources report that is exactly what Pres Trump said when he decided to arm the Kurds.

Is Raqqa one of the Armageddon cities? There's two or three where the final battle supposedly happens, is this one?

Amen. A powerful Kurdistan may be the exact solution to the Islamic terror crisis.

They are good people. I've lived among them. They can live side by side with the world and are no threat to others.
