Schumer is badly misplaying the Gorsuch nomination

Schumer: Gorsuch will not get 60 votes
If I were a Democrat remotely interested in having the party appeal to more than just the wingnuts, I'd be pissed with the filibuster strategy. There is nothing the Dems can do to override the GOP if they decide to play the hand Reid dealt for bypassing the filibuster.
He has two choices:
- Confirm Gorsuch with a credible (though inconsequential) dissenting minority. You keep the nuclear option as something the GOP will use to confirm a true firebrand where you have a better chance of casting the nominee as unfit. You win by letting the GOP look like they are railroading a bad candidate.
- Force the GOP to go nuclear now to confirm a nominee that even members of your own party say is qualified and reasonable. You have now shown that there is no middle ground available, and your party will make every issue a hill to die on, no matter what the consensus opinion is.
I concede that refusal to consider Garland was a contributing factor, but you also have to acknowledge the Biden rule in that. You could reasonably call those offsetting. The current strategy, though, has effectively zero support among the groups that just cost your party the presidency.
It literally makes no difference what he does. Gorsuch will be confirmed. Do you want to further marginalize your party in the process?

You may be right. Dangerous game, though, for all involved.

You do realize that Harry Reid already changed the rules, right? the only thing that was not included in the Nuclear option was the Supreme Court.

The Democrats throw as much shite against the wall as possible and just rely on their ability to spin and the support they have from the msm. Once upon a time it might have been more nuanced but I think it's devolved into something more hostile. Their hatred has made them predictably short-sighted.

They are playing the wrong game considering all of the moderate/liberal judges are the older judges. They could be looking at a stacked conservative court for years to come if Gorsuch is the mountain they want to die on.

The Dems already changed the rules when they had control in the senate. Why should the majority rule not apply to the supreme court? Republicans would be stupid not to use a simple majority to confirm a Republican nominee. They can change the court to a conservative lean for many years if fairly young judges are selected. Does anyone doubt that Democrats would do this if they had the chance? They changed the rules when it benefitted them; they would certainly do it again.

I don't understand the logic behind saving the filibuster for the next nominee, wouldn't the Republicans just go nuclear to get nominee #2 through?
The right thing to do is Option 1. I think they should not filibuster Gorsuch and I'm a liberal. Two wrongs don't make a right. Republicans shouldn't have obstructed Garland and allowed an up or down vote. But, Democrats need to let it go and be reasonable. The finger pointing needs to stop.
The politically expedient route is Option 2. The Dem base is pissed off and irrational.

Yes saying it has been radically changed already.
Dude, the rule is already changed! We don't k ow what you mean. IF we are stupid enough not to use it, the dems can still use it Ayer I. They have used it in lower courts.

They've been doing this shite since FDR tried to pack the USSC in the 30s

Unilateral disarmament is silly in this context. If they're willing to go nuclear to replace Scalia, surely they are to replace RBG. Let's make sure everyone knows exactly what is at stake in 2018 and beyond.

I think that they are just being obstinant, trolling assholes and will ultimately confirm Gorsuch without incident.

OMG
Did you just wake up from a 40 year comma?
GOP passes every libtard nomination as long as they are qualified! Basically they will go to SCOTUS if they can walk, chew gum, and were a judge on a federal level. They have never Borked a judge nor have they tried to derail a nomination with made up shite like Thomas.
Breyer, Ginsburg, Sotomayor, and Kagan were all confirmed despite known fire breathing severe leftist biases.
Inaction on the Garland nomination follows DNC precedent.
Reid ruling a dimocrat filibuster would pave the way for fire breathing conservative nominations. This will eliminate the need to nominate the likes of Kennedy or O'Connor.
Ummmmm..........
On second thought, Schumer is magnificent political grand master!!! Baiting the GOP is a master strategy that will lead to more leftist radicals on the court!!!
Geaux Schumer geaux you magnificent SOB!!!
