At least half the United States high schools have stopped giving the award
Wow.

Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia had 178 valedictorians,
So basically Home Ec, shop and whatever crap they are teaching these days. I read somewhere a list of some of the inane easy classes they are teaching in high school now...like, Life Skills - which is if you show up to class, you get an A.
Do high schools even teach Home Ec anymore or is that considered sexist?

Left wingers think ALL competition is unhealthy.

When I went to high school the highest GPA you could have was a 4.0 and the only time you got an A was when you really earned it.
There was none of this giving everyone an A so that everyone could get a scholarship.

How many AP classes did your high school have?
it's been over 50 years since I was in high school but if I remember correctly, we called them "honor classes" and only the smartest students were allowed to take them.
I don't remember how many "honor classes" my high school had but we had them for all of the subjects. I do remember that I was placed into the "honor math classes". I was good at doing math but I remember that I was not even close to being as smart as the smartest students in my "honor math classes". I remember 3 students (2 males and one female) in particular who were fricking geniuses.

If you are suggesting my high school was not a meritocracy you are completely off the mark. It was one of the most competitive public HS in the South East at the time.
I'm only suggesting that if your high school has 178 valedictorians then your school doesn't know the definition of valedictorian.

I don't know if they still do it but Evangel HS of Shreveport named every girl in the senior class as the Homecoming Queen. It was a self esteem policy. It also applied for Cheerleader. If a girl tried out, she made the squad.

That's a great way to motivate students to work harder in order to achieve the goals they set for themselves.
