Heritage High School, Walters’ school, is not alone in getting rid of the award. At least half the United States high schools have stopped giving the award or they name multiple valedictorians for the graduating class.  Officials argue that the award can cause overly competitive students and unnecessary stress. Down the road from TownHall HQ, Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia had 178 valedictorians, all one needed for this award a 4.0 or higher GPA.  Some schools say it has been a positive for students to get rid of the award. Administrators say it allows students to be more eligible for scholarships and other advantages from college.  “We found that [naming one valedictorian] is shutting our students out from some really positive opportunities” said Scott Martzloff, a superintendent in Western New York.

First this is ridiculous, and secondly, how weak is a schools curriculum if 178 students have a 4.0 grade point average?

Creating laziness leads to more government dependency and furthers the communist agenda. Is anyone suprised?

This made me laugh. I went to a very good HS and graduated with well over 100 classmates with 4.0 or higher GPS. Mine was 4.24. High Schools normally give .5 increase for honors classes and 1. increase for AP classes. Our valedictorian was in the 4.6 range. We tested into AP classes to avoid having to take the lower classes. For the upper level GPAs you needed to make sure you took EVERY AP class the school offered. You hated taking any of the classes not offered as at least honors level because it brought your GPA down even if you aced the class. My class had over 20 get full rides to Ivys, 5 with rides to MIT and Cal Tech and probably 50 more with rides to schools considered just under Ivy.

Now I don't know if I would consider removing valedictorians and salutatorians but I can say the stress was immense on my friends that were fighting for them. Just the stress of mapping out three years of AP classes to get them all in was insane. We would have to take study halls instead of electives because an A in an elective could bring down your GPA. Our salutatorian lost out to a tie for valedictorian because he made a B+ in a German class because his brain just didn't work for language. I had AP calc with him our junior years and I would watch him read some obscure book until he got called on to solve on the board and he would walk up, look at the problem, pick up a piece of chalk in each hand and write the solution from the left and right to the center, he would do the same thing with physics and chemistry problems.

First they banned Homecoming kings and queens (read about some schools doing this a while back). Now they are banning valedictorians.

In the future they will ban the entire notion of grading (this is already being discussed in some circles).

In the quest for a more perfect equality, the leftists want to make everyone literally equal. Anyone opposed to this is literally Hitler.

What kind of commie bs is this? We are extremely fricked if this is the new normal.

It’s like sports without a winner. Whole point is to better yourself to beat the guy across from you and learn invaluable life lessons.

I've been saying for years that they want a society that acts like an ant hill.

So who gets to make the valedictorian address or is that even still a thing nowadays?

In a way it is. You have many very bright, intellectual kids like I was that disdained the notion of patronizing and stoking the ego of educators to win a participation trophy like valedictorian.

yeah, that's all being a valedictorian is, a reward for participating.

Jealousy seems to be a problem here.

A lot of intelligent people don't find geometry and basic Spanish intellectually stimulating and thus lose focus. I think there are a lot of people in my shoes that could of done good but were to smart.

This is one of your better attempts, but the trolling is still way too obvious. Maybe cut this statement out:

I was independently learning theoretical physics in like 4th grade.

Some honors programs have A as 5 points, so 4.0 would be a solid B average. (This was the case in my school, senior AP classes were 6 points for A)

Got it. Back in the days when I went to high school, 4.0 was the highest one could achieve.
