Saving the country & Saving SCOTUS - The debt to Mitch McConnell

Mitch is not that well liked here on the TD poliboard; but he did come through on this & deserves credit.
I was always committed to supporting the Republican nominee, mainly because of THIS issue
I am very thankful to Mitch and Senate Republicans for their commitment and resolve on this issue

The debt to Mitch McConnell
quote:
No other consideration drove conservatives to Donald Trump like the prospect of a U.S. Supreme Court dedicated to preserving the Constitution as it was written and honored for centuries. The Donald promised to appoint judges in the mold of the late Antonin Scalia to the seat vacated by Mr. Scalia’s death.
Mr. Trump can redeem that promise when he first takes office on Jan. 20 next year, thanks in good measure to Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate majority leader who announced on the death of Judge Scalia that the majority of the Senate would defer action on President Obama’s proposed replacement until after the November election, and rallied his colleagues to keep the pledge.
Mr. McConnell, who is sometimes scolded by conservatives as insufficiently resolute, withstood pressure from the Democrats and their media allies, particularly after the president nominated Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, to fill the Scalia vacancy. Liberal pressure groups turned up the heat on Republican senators facing tough re-election campaigns, demanding that Judge Garland be confirmed at once.
Certain Republican senators, who sometimes wilt and wobble under pressure, fretted that the pledge to block the Garland nomination might be unwise because Hillary Clinton looked like a winner and it might be better to confirm Judge Garland now because a prospective President Clinton wouldn’t nominate anyone better. Keeping senators in line is always a test for a majority leader; it’s a chore like herding cats. But Sen. McConnell stood firm.

LOL, McConnell deserves no credit for this whatsoever. It was a no-brainer, you hold off on the confirmation of Garland until the election results. If Hillary wins, you confirm him. If Trump wins, you don't.

I'll admit, I thought it was a questionable to poor decision at the time.

McConnell is a mess. He's a waste. Total swamp creature.

If Scalia had died in say September, sure.

Even if any debt is owed...if he pisses it away by not going nuclear on SC nominees, it won't matter.

I agree with this
we have 53 solid votes that I know of (the Dem Senator from WV)
any thoughts on where we get 7 more?
I am 100% behind the "nuclear option" for SCOTUS nominees - we can reshape the judiciary & we need to go ahead and do it

I thought about making this thread myself - I'm shocked he pulled it off
Those of you acting like it wasn't ballsy as hell are being dishonest

absolutely
Garland was in no way the "worst" person we could have gotten from the left & we did have the protection of a Senate majority
odds are that Hillary would have renominated Garland (she was running on preserving Obama's legacy), so there wasn't as much at stake as there could have been
BUT, the repercussions on us if she had won and the Senate had gone dem were likely to be YUGE (you may have noticed that leftists can be pretty vindictive)
Not a big fan of Mitch most of the time, but he did us righteous with this one!

Easy. You don't need to go nuclear. Just look at the Dems up for reelection in 2018:
Montana
Ohio
Indiana
Florida
Missouri
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Michigan
Pennsylvania
North Dakota
You can find enough from that list to understand that it would be political suicide to filibuster...especially Montana, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, and North Dakota.

I said this on election night. Mitch came through and did not cave to intense pressure from all sides.

great point!
I do think we should go "nuclear" if we have to, but it would be better if we don't
winning and making the country better is the goal, ratcheting down the divisiveness & rhetoric would be helpful
but again, if we cannot - well, frick 'em

McConnell finally benefits from his standard pose of not doing jack shite.
No thanks. frick him.

Mitch gave in 99 times, and held ground once.
I'm not ready to clap.

McConnell is a scumbag, and he's not the only one that's a R.
Posted on 11/23/16 at 11:35 am to dcbl
Mitch McConnell is a piece of shite. I hope he gets a Clinton special very soon.
Posted on 11/23/16 at 11:41 am to CaptainBrannigan
Yes he is, but I'd say Harry Reid is a much bigger POS.
Now this is uncalled for. You've officially revealed yourself as a hyper-partisan, intolerant POS.
