All I know is that this sounds a heck of a lot more shady than the Ferguson-Gentle Giant deal .... and, we don't see SLC being burned to the ground.

Dillon Taylor, 20, who is from Salt Lake, was exiting 7-Eleven with his brother and cousin, Adam Thayne, around 7 p.m. on Monday, when Salt Lake City police arrived, responding to a report of a man waving a gun in the area.

The officers ordered the men to the ground. Two of them complied, but Dillon, who police say matched the suspect's description, did not go down.

"It came in as a 911 call that there was a man with a gun," said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Darrin Sweeten. "He was verbally challenged and ultimately was shot."

Sweeten did not release further details on the shooting on Tuesday.

Dillon's brother and cousin claim they were on their way to visit his parents' graves and that Dillon was surprised by the police presence. He was not aggressive, they said.

"He had headphones in, and he couldn't hear [anything], and then they finally surrounded him," Jerrail said. "They're like, 'Get on the ground,' and [he] pulled up his pants and [they] shot him."

Thayne believes police might have thought his cousin was reaching for a gun when, in reality, he grabbed his cell phone.

"I was in shock, because he was wearing a white t-shirt and there was blood all over it," Thayne said. "They ran up and handcuffed him. He wasn't moving."

A witness's video shows police yelling for the two men to remain on the ground as Thayne repeatedly screams that they have shot his cousin.

The two men were taken to the police station, but released hours later without being charged or cited.

Family said Dillon had had struggles throughout his teenage and adult life, including a criminal past, after losing his parents at the age of 12.

They hope to remember him as a loyal friend and devoted father-to-be. His girlfriend is just a couple months pregnant, Jerrail said.

Dang, another tragedy. Looks like a horrible mistake, though I understand why the cops did what they did. You get a call about an armed suspect, a guy refuses to get down and goes for an object in his pants; you would be taking a risk to not shoot. That said, he didn't get down because he had on ear phones and was reaching to pull up his pants (or his cell phone) not a gun. And now there is a one more fatherless kid.

Awful.

I am "entitled" to my opinion.

And, it is a long-standing opinion dating back to being a wee lad wearing a baseball cap.

Not a fan of the flat brim.

At the same time, I would really hope that a flat brim has nothing to do with anything.

I don't like jorts, either ... and, if some dude gets capped wearing jorts ... I'm still not gonna like them.

Tonight when I get home, I'm gonna go in my son's room. Sure he's busting a sag, got his cap on backwards, never had a job, and he's cooking meth in a 3 liter pepsi bottle, but he's my baby.

Yes, it's a mistake on this idiots part. If cops are pointing guns at you and telling you to get on the ground DO IT! Why grab at your pants? Are people really this stupid?

If being "fly" involves a lack of respect to #waronwomenz as your sig quote implies, maybe that's not really a state to which someone should aspire.

Sad story, the double standard by the media in this country is ridiculous. Until they are held accountable for the way they pic, choose and then biasely cover those stories, we will continue to see stories like Ferguson and nothing about this story in Utah.

This theory has ALREADY been debunked,

Just because you and all others keep repeating doesn't make true. Hell even the FAMILY'S own autopsy proved you wrong.

This.

If a cop has me at gunpoint, the last thing I think about doing is reaching for my phone
