Paul Ryan said he plans to remain as speaker and not call an early leadership election, but well-wired Republicans tell Jonathan Swan and me that Ryan may be forced out sooner.

What we're hearing: One source close to leadership told us: "Scuttlebutt is that Paul will have to step down from speakership soon. Members won’t follow a lame duck, he’ll have no leverage to cut deals, and the last thing they need in this environment is 6 months of palace intrigue and everyone stabbing everyone else in the back."

**A senior GOP House member predicted this about Ryan’s future: “He will be gone by the end of July.”

**Some big donors, who have given millions to Ryan this cycle, may not want him to stay on as speaker if the entire party is taking on water.

**This is not because he’ll struggle to raise money. Enough donors from the old Romney-Ryan world will write checks to Ryan to try to save the majority.

**It’s more about certainty and stability. Members need certainty and they don’t want to operate until November in a climate where every move from every member of leadership is viewed through the prism of jostling for the speakership.

**Our sources say that could pull an already divided conference even further apart.

So we wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan reverses himself before August, setting an early election for the next speaker:

**The question then will be: Does Trump weigh in? Sources close to him say he’ll instinctively want to back the

Shows what a bunch of cowards the Republicans are that he is still the speaker. Oh you're leaving....pack up and go fricker, right now. And of course Ryan would never do the honorable thing and just step aside immediately. He's a traitor to the nation.

I am wondering how is it that McCarthy (who has successfully sucked up to Trump and I don't think really likes him any more than Ryan does) whom we all instinctively know is neverTrump GOPe....get past his affair that stopped him the last time for the coveted Speaker spot?

McCarthy is a Ryan, Romney, Cantor (one of the establishment boys) BFF, can he be trusted?

Is Scalise a turncoat? (we were all fooled with Ryan)

The good news is the freedom caucus gets a say, not just the nevertrumpers.

Hell no he can't be trusted. If I was Trump there are only a couple that I would put any trust in....Rand and probably Tom Cotton.........Gowdy sometimes.

Remember the rumor months ago that made the news that Ryan was out and Scalise was in? Ryan denied it big time. We are now being slow rolled this.

Well since both are Senators, I can comfortably say that this is not going to happen....and Gowdy is calling it quits as well

Anybody else not super excited about this? I mean, I'm excited for the swamp draining, but I'd trade losing Ryan for losing McConnell in a heartbeat. The Turtle needs to go.

keep on believing all the blue wave polls again. No way will America vote in Schiff for brains as the grand puba of the corrupt lodge on any committee. The lodge of R's and D's is corrupt enough, thank you very much.

You are an inbasile of you think its wise for the US Speaker of the House to try and remain a LEADER for 6 months while hes known to be leaving.

He should have been gone a year ago, but definitely now that its known hes a quitter. You simply cant grasp the nature of a high level leadership role. Weakness or quitting or ineffectiveness are NOT traits desired for the role.
