While we never hear of it, I would guess that the reverse scenario applies to the US as well.

I seriously doubt it was 20 feet. One mistake by either pilot and they're both dead.

20 feet separation with both planes matched in airspeed and direction is a lot of space in the military world. Brand new Navy pilots doing formation training fly with as little as 3 foot wingtip separation.
