another update, reportedly the captain of the plane makes the flight plan not ATC, so the flight plan took them over this war zone.

I'll rephrase. The person or persons who shot this missile was shooting at a military plane but it missed and shot down a passenger jet.
Note: I may have this wrong a military plane was shot down yesterday not sure if it happened again today.

Uh huh. What kind of military jet?
These things have radar target detection from what I can tell.
The size and speed of the target for a civilian airliner would be a lot fricking bigger and slower than a fighter.
It would likely be a lot faster than a Ukrainian military cargo plane, too, if it is a 777.

For example a flight plan will have multiple nav points, I can request from ATC to go direct to point X. Technically I am no longer "on course" per that flight plan. As far as ATC making the flight plan that's false, you file your flight plan with ATC.
