re: Russia is starting to speak about Baltic countries as it did about Ukraine

Why would the West bail out Russia AFTER he invades the Baltics? That doesn't make any sense at all. He would confiscate the hard currency assets of the countries he invaded.
My thinking was that he'd be negotiating from a position of extreme power then. We'd literally be starting WWIII to do anything other than settle or negotiate sanctions. And we couldn't really "punish" the Baltic nations by allowing Russia's finances to drag down their economies as well.
I don't see what Putin has to lose if Russia's current financial landscape is as bleak as you say it is? He'd be immensely popular in Russia for acting strong and what's his downside?

the baltics are not exactly awash in wealth though. They have fared better than some of the other former soviet bloc but are still relatively poor.

Maybe I'm tired but you aren't making sense to me.

I don't see why that's so hard to believe, Russkie. We didn't help Ukraine so why would we help others if military action became a necessity?
I honestly think our true "red line" would be Finland or the Czech. I feel like everything else Putin could grab without military retaliation. Those countries aren't "European enough" to garner support in "Old Europe/Western Europe" for those liberal pacifist nations to retaliate.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong. But I think much like Hitler could have gotten away with his initial few forays and land grabs, Putin could pretty much regain the Soviet Union's old land mass without a full scare war.

Hard to believe that Putin wants to invade the Baltics?? Is that what you're saying?
If so, did you even read the OP??? That's the point of this thread.
Now what was all that "negotiating" crap you were referring to?
There would be no negotiating. If Russia attacked the Baltics, NATO would either defend those countries militarily or it wouldn't. There would be nothing to negotiate.

US Sends 'Ironhorse' Tanks To NATO's Nervous Baltic Front Line
(Reuters) - U.S. troops and tanks will deploy across the three Baltic states and Poland in the next two weeks on a mission designed to deliver an unmistakeable message of NATO resolve to Moscow.
The "Ironhorse" armored cavalry unit, with around 700 soldiers, some 20 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks with Bradley and Stryker armored fighting vehicles, is one of the most formidable U.S. military forces to be sent onto former Soviet soil. Several of the bases and training areas it will operate from were built for the old Soviet Red Army.
The aim is to convince Moscow that - unlike in non-NATO Ukraine - any Russian interference in Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia would put it at war with the Western alliance.

I said I agree that he'll invade. I'm saying that NATO will capitulate and negotiate with him rather than responding militarily.
Dude you seem like you're going to have a coronary or something - chillax and smoke some mid-grade or drink some red wine

This is easy. If troops attack a nato country then it's war with nato. The United states has a battle hardened militarily. russia...heh...Not So much.

If Finland gets dragged into something the US maritime industry is going to suffer greatly. They manufacture tons of stuff used all over the inland waterways.

And you really wish you could talk about how bad arse flexing our muscle makes you feel, but you can't. Cause Obama is the one doing it.
This board would be covered in semen if Romney were president and this was a story.

No offense but we go to war with Russia, the Finnish support of the US maritime industry is not really a huge concern of mine.

quote:Yes, he cares. The political calculus he performs might lead him to conclude that NATO will do nothing in response to Russian acts of war, but he at least has to weigh the risks that NATO will respond.
Of course the Baltics are all in NATO. The question is does Putin care about that?
If NATO lives up to its principles and all members mobilize there is no way that Russia could prevail in a war fought with conventional weapons. Russia would be looking at a multiple front war fought against economies that dwarf its own.

Hell, if the CIA was doing its job, they'd be working to foment some kind of Islamic unrest like desecration of the Koran or blaspheming Muhammad, that would attract the radicals like ISIS & Al Qaeda to wage holy war against Russia. Russia has over 11 million Muslims inside it borders and its southern borders are primarily populated by Muslim countries.
Wouldn't be the 1st time that we've fabricated unrest inside of another country. Hell, they could chop of a few heads of some Russians or maybe blowup one of those fancy Orthodox churches. And there had to be a lot of Muslims on the Malaysian airline that the rebels shot down.
