SAN FRANCISCO — Texas Gov. Rick Perry drew a comparison between alcoholism and homosexuality during a California visit that also dealt with economic issues.

Perry’s comments to the Commonwealth Club of California came after Texas’ Republican Convention on Saturday sanctioned platform language allowing Texans to seek voluntary counseling to “cure” being gay.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that in response to a question about the voluntary counseling, Perry said he did not know whether the therapy worked.

Perry, a former and potential future GOP presidential candidate, was then asked whether he believed that homosexuality was a disorder.

quote:

“I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way,” he said.

I've heard people say that at least a dozen times.

I thought he was going to regroup after the "oops" debacle, and come back strong. Many were saying it was an anomaly..and that he was a real contender. Looks like not so much. What a dumb arse.

Seems like a pretty straightforward take on the idea of genetic predisposition.

I guess it's fun to try to twist it into some sort of slam on him, though.

Well it could have been worse. He could have compared it to pedophilia.

Except for the fact that alcoholism is considered a disease....so Perry is suggesting homosexuality is some sort of disease that requires a cure.

So are you saying homosexuals aren't allowed a choice in their lifestyle?

Yeah, cause that's wonderfully analogous to a mental predisposition.

he sounds like a "born that way" guy to me.

I thought gaydom agrees with this. Why the anger?

Well then tell me... Where does a genetic abnormality that can be corrected stop???

Please give me a comprehensive list of genetic abnormalities and whether they can be willed away or not.

TIA

That is what he is saying, but in the same sentence he is saying that they can/should choose not to be that way. That they should fight it and that the genetic abnormality can be corrected.

exactly, he could have said anything and it turns out he's wacked out

The whole "disease" concept of alcoholism is based upon extensive drinking over years until your cells malform and adapt to a constant craving for the liquor as if that is where the nutrients come from. The original choice to drink, however, is just a simple uncoerced act or choice. Sounds like Perry is trying to give the benefit of doubt that there is an original genetic disposition.

So if a person has a genetic inclination to become an alcoholic you think he will still become one if he choses to never drink?

I'm saying that homosexuals don't have a choice in who they are attracted to.

Perry and the rest of the clowns that Republicans had to choose from in the last elections keep proving themselves to be a joke.

This guy, Bachman, Cain and Santorum. What a charlie foxtrot.
