Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate introduced legislation this week to reform the laws that govern firearm silencers. The twin bills, both named the Hearing Protection Act, were introduced by Reps. Jeff Duncan (R., S.C) and John Carter (R., Texas) in the House and Sen. Mike Crapo (R., Idaho) in the Senate.

The bills would remove the special $200 tax and months-long registration process currently applied to silencers. The requirement that anyone buying a silencer from a licensed gun dealer pass a background check will remain.

Gun rights advocates have long argued that silencers are a safety device since they reduce the noise associated with firing many firearms from a level that is damaging to the shooter’s hearing to a level that, while not actually silent, is far safer. They believe that easier access to and wider adoption of the devices could reduce firearm-related hearing damage, especially for those who commonly hunt without hearing protection. Advocates often compare firearms silencers to car mufflers since Hiram Percy Maxim had a hand in creating both and they both utilize the same technology.

As a proud firearm suppressor owner, I am 100% in support of this legislation.

It's nice to have Americans back in charge of America. First time since 1922 the republicans have been able to do shite without those leftist scumbags blocking them.

I am currently in the market for a new suppressor. I'm tempted to get one now and pay the $200 tax because if this legislation goes into effect, I anticipate a short term shortage and price gauging due to the increase in demand.

In the short term probably. But I've also heard that long term this will drive the cost down significantly. Right now anyone who's willing to pay the tax and wait 6-8 months for a suppressor wants one that will last is and is high quality so there really isn't a market for "low-end" silencers. After this passes I expect to see people fill that market with silencers that won't last as long as the high end ones but will get the job done. They will become a consumable just like ammo is. Pick up a few for $50 a pop at the store when you buy ammo and that will last you a year or two.

It's for the children.

We have to protect their hearing.

If your pending approval then the $200 tax stamp will be reimbursed if this passes, as I'm told.

I think they'll be dirt cheap soon enough. Yeah there will be a run, but i built my BCM almost a year ago, i can wait a little longer.

ETA: How much does a quality unit run anyway? I was never interested enough to go wait list so ive never even checked.

Not that you really care, but they do make an AR a more effective home defense weapon as firing one inside can be so loud as to disorient the shooter.

I really dont want to have to shoot mine inside without one.

Easy there, it just some mild sarc.

I'm 100% for deregulating firearms and firearm accessories as much as possible.

I would like to have a genuine assault weapon myself (the kind that empties the mag with one pull on the trigger)

I am 100% for people having fire arms.

I am not sure what the purpose for people having silencers, besides thinking it is cool.

I don't really have an opinion on this one way or the other. I'd like to try one out but I don't see why anyone would actually need one.

Try one. You might see why someone would need one.

Lol. Well the republicans were the yankee progressives back then. Learn your history.

You're also wrong about republican control. Bush jr had control of congress and all they managed was more war and a bailout of some predatory financial institutions.

This is waaaaaaay past due and it will pass quickly.

Also, they need to do away with the SBR law as well. What a crock of bravo sierra that one is.

Wonder when the liberals are going to realize that only law abiding citizens abide by the laws. Crooks and criminals could give a rat's arse about the laws.
