Rand Paul interviewed by Greta.....

I have just viewed an excerpt of the interview. Rand was speaking to the disparity of crime in the black community. He also spoke to people being upset when fines begin to add up when they are not paid.....well HELLO...if you don't pay them you either get an increase of the fine or an arrest warrant.
I am generally a big Rand supporter, but he definitely appeared to be pandering to the black community.
I WANT more black individuals to join conservatives. BUT you have to present your message clearly, while still holding people accountable for their actions. PANDERING makes you no better than democrats.
It was just an excerpt, and the rest of the interview will be aired on another date, but that sample was disappointing.

Personal responsibility is so "80's"

I think Rand Paul is an interesting candidate with real possibilities. That said, he is going to disappoint a lot of right wingers on this board, imo, based upon the interviews I've seen and read.

lol ... there's not a republican who doesn't pander to everyone else, same as the dems ...
pull the lever for the libertarian party next election and have a clear conscience, instead of thinking the pubs and dems are different from one another ...

The problem is the multitude of laws esp the revenue generating type that disproportionately impact poor people. That's what he's talking about.

He's right. Poor people are affected more by the CJ system that people with resources.

To a large extent I agree with your sentiment, BUT the way he conveyed his message (albeit a small excerpt) was pandering.
I have always stated that there are entirely too many laws on the books (this is coming from a LEO). BUT actions must have consequences.
I truly believe that the overwhelming majority of conservatives want the black community to succeed (because conservatives are actually more compassionate than libs), but we are a nation of laws. Do I agree with all of the laws....absolutely not. But if you know something is illegal.....don't get pissed when you get busted and have to pay a fine, that is asinine.

That's because people that live below the poverty level commit more crimes. Does that mean that they should not be punished because they are indigent?

Rand advocating smaller government in a way that appeals to new demographics and packaging the message in less stereotypical ways is nothing but good. I fear the talk radio listener types will hold it against him in the primary but the polls seem to indicate otherwise.

People below the poverty line pay more for low level offenses that we all commit.

I think his focus on this stuff is also the silly War on Drugs(tm).
I assure you he's not talking about violent crime and that should be clear in the full interview.
And he's right - the little things add up.

Cwill:
I think you've got it. There are real concerns that in some communities, law enforcement is being used to produce revenue. I have bit seen the Pauk comments but you can still be concerned about the impact of such law enforcement tactics while still believing in personal responsibility.

Specifically which low level offenses do I commit and what preferential treatment do I receive after committing them?

People of means can make charges disappear, or hire good attorneys to get them off light. Poor people are screwed.

See what roger said above and consider what a $100 seatbelt violation means to you v a poor person.
Posted on 11/26/14 at 11:20 pm to cwill
Step one: wear your seatbelt in the first place.
Step two: don't worry about having to pay a fine that you cannot afford.
I flat out reject the premise that it is impossible to live life without breaking commonly known and understood laws.
Roger's point states the obvious, money has a diminishing marginal value. This point can be made about many things besides fines for traffic offenses.

I agree with this. Rand gets race, and a lot of Republicans will resent him for this.

Rand is not really a Republican, and holds many anti-rhino beliefs. He is more of an independent than he is a Republican, and he holds a few
democrat ideas as well. He is not the perfect Republican candidate.
And I hope he wins big.
