Is racial profiling "racist", unfair, or good police work? Whites murdering whites isn't nearly as predominant in the white community as blacks killing blacks in the black community, not even close. The number one cause of death for black males 18-34 years of age is murder by other blacks. Whites outnumber blacks 5:1, but according to the US Department of Justice, blacks accounted for 52.5% of homicide offenders from 1980 to 2008, with whites 45.3% and Native Americans and Asians 2.2%. The offending rate for blacks was almost 8 times higher than whites, and the victim rate 6 times higher. This is what needs to be discussed. If we want to reduce violent crimes it seems like we know where and who to look for? This starts by having more police in these problem areas which will obviously lead to a higher rate of people being incarcerated for "petty crimes".

Profiling isn't unfair. Harassing innocent people based on profiling is unfair.

If they look like a "THUG" and act like a "THUG" and approach you like a "THUG", they are a "THUG"!

See I just profiled a "THUG"!

Thugs are dying in the Baton Rouge streets seems like everyday! Killed by other Thugs!

Are you like, literally, half white?

Exactly. I don't think it's about the color of your skin as much as it is the way you present yourself. White thugs and black thugs will always be looked at differently, as they should be!

Only in my speech, according to some of my extended family

I'm dark as frick irl Both my parents are black (in appearance). THEIR parents/grandparents had some mixage going on, though.

It doesn't sound like you know what racial profiling is.

Ahh solid post. Let's ignore these glaring grotesque facts and waste our time talking about Michael Brown. The reason I started this thread is because I've been on the road all day listening to CNN and they've discussed it a minimum of 6 times.

Our ancestors that survived to pass on their genes to us learned to generalize and stereotype because snap judgments were an aid to survival. If a certain community has a much higher crime rate, then you obviously are going to give them less of a benefit of the doubt than other communities. Profiling based on race, clothing, what have you still serves a vital purpose. People who say otherwise do not want negative consequences from their community's actions. The profiling has nothing to do with racism. It has everything to do with cause and effect.

I love you OMMG. But, there is no reason to get upset over this thread.

This is an uncomfortable bed of "our" own making.

To answer the OP:

If your wife (mother, sister, GF?) sees me walking toward her as darkness is falling and locks her car door...she is being unnecessarily, but REASONABLY, cautious.

If she sees me walking toward her and she locks the door to her diner...she is a racist bitch.

If she tells a neeger joke at her Bunko hen party...she is just telling a joke.

If she, as a loan officer, denies me a loan that I am otherwise qualified for on the assumption that I am risky because of race....she is a racist bitch.

I understand that I may be watched a bit more closely in an expensive store. But, so long as I am not prohibited from shopping...its cool.

I try as hard as possible to demonstrate understanding and proper behavior in hopes that it will simply chip a tiny piece off of the boulder of racial profiling suspicion. Its a MUCH easier "burden" than my forebears toiled beneath.

That a loud group has created doubt is not MY fault....but, it is not exactly YOUR fault either.

My dad has seen progress. I've seen progress. Maybe a generation or two from now will read these threads and wonder what it was like in those "awful times".

Oh believe me BHP, I'm not upset at all. I mean, the truth of the matter is this isn't an original thread and there have been countless before it. Nobody's view ever changes

Ehh I agree with the rest of your post, but can't say I agree with this part. I'm not cool with being followed in a store because I'm black. Now, I'm not going to raise a fuss or bitch about it (probably just not go back to that store), but being grouped in the "potential criminal" category when I've done nothing is annoying.

But I do agree, we have made massive progress, and my life has been pretty damn easy/sweet overall

You miss an opportunity to have fun.

Pick up an item, stuff it in your pockets while looking around furtively.

Stick a tee shirt under your own shirt and flatten it down...

Then start looking round again....and walk to the register, pull everything out and pay for it

It depends.

Were the police being racist and/or unfair when they detained me while I was walking down the street minding my own business because I fit the description of someone who just committed murder?

Were the police being racist and/or unfair when they detained me while I was walking down the street minding my own business because I fit the description of someone who just robbed a bank around the corner?

If I was black it would probably be considered racist and unfair but because I am white it would probably be considered good police work.

Thank you BHP for the very well thought out response. There is obviously a big difference between racial profiling and illegally profiling someone and denying their rights.

That's not illegally profiling someone. That's illegally discriminating against someone.
