Does anyone know what the difference is between 'Air Defense Identification Zone of the US' and US air space?!?! Bottom line: did these ruskies violate US borders? Thanks.

This is the same stuff they've been doing since the 50's

OK, but that still doesn't answer my question.

I have absolutely no clue about this but, judging by the names, I'd guess the first is where we will start thinking about shooting shite down.

I also didn't read that either. Just saying that because of the "defense" part.

They didn't penetrate US Airspace but before the line of demarcation there is a buffer area.

consider it to be international airspace but with a firm but professional escort. A rattlesnake rattling.

This is a lot of non news as it's happened forever.

An ADIZ extends beyond a country's territorial airspace. An aircraft entering the zone that does not identify itself will be investigated, which is what happened Monday with the Russian aircraft. However, it is not a violation to fly through an ADIZ.

More correctly, turboprop bombers (Tu-95 Bear). And yes - this has been going on for decades. Tu-95 entered service with the Soviet Union in 1956.

"The design of the propellers and the engines' high power made the Tu-95 one of the noisiest aircraft in the world"

So, do they use those flying dinosaurs for anything OTHER than taunting the Americans?

That's a pretty damned good question. I wonder if they were used in Afghanistan or possibly Chechnya.

The two Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers flew roughly 280 miles southwest of Elmendorf Air Force Base, within the Air Defense Identification Zone of the United States.

The Tu-95 Bear is a TurboProp plane, not a jet.

Carry very nasty anti-shipping missiles and provide over the horizon targeting for Russian Attack Subs, also if they cant get you with missiles, they will make you deaf with their contra-rotating props. Loud doesn't begin describe it.

That's the equivalent of a bi-plane. I guess they don't mind losing those.

They are just showing they have a couple of bombers that can fly over.
.
I can't help but think we have anti-aircraft missiles that can identify and take out these bombers long before they reach us air space if we wanted to drop them.

TU-95 is their B-52. A couple landed at Barksdale in the early 90s, they are very striking aircraft.

Though the Tu-95 is old, consider our B-52s are older, be it, more capable, cuz America.....the bear is still capable and worth our attention.

I think we are beginning to look into replacing the B-52s though.
