Puerto Rico Irony

So I have firsthand experience and knowledge of what has been happening in Puerto Rico over the years. I was stationed at naval station Roosevelt Roads for about 3 years from 2000 to 2003. As a side note, that was some of the best years of my life living down there as a bachelor. The base had closed shortly after I had left.
I was one of the ones that was personally dealing with the large ongoing Anti-Navy protests in Vieques, which is a small Puerto Rican island-municipality 8 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico. Part of Vieques was used as a US military bombing range for 60 years up until it's closer in 2003 due to the protests. In 2001 on Vieques, I was one of the guys that apprehended Bobby Kennedy Jr, Al Sharpton, Edward Olmos, Luis Gutierrez, and Jesse Jackson (among many other protesters over the time I was there) for cutting the fence line and trespassing on federal property during a "peaceful" protest of the Navy.
Obviously Puerto Rico was receiving millions of dollars just for the Naval Bases being there. I saw the anti-American protests with my own eyes over those years and their main goal was to kick the Navy out of Puerto Rico (which obviously happened) and ultimately gain independence from the US. It was widely known while I was there that the massively corrupt politicians in Puerto Rico were just pocketing all of the money that the US was sending to Puerto Rico and now we see how much debt they are in and are pushing for a US bailout. All I can do is laugh at the irony of Puerto Ricans now demanding help from the US after all of the anti-American sentiment I've witnessed during my time there.

Puerto Rico IS the US, until it isn't.
How can they receive help from the US when they are the US?
The island is full of US citizens. They aren't giving that up.
That is sovereign US territory. How does making America great again involve giving up our sovereign territory?

I wasn't nor am I promoting Puerto Rico independence. I was just pointing out that there was a huge percentage of the Puerto Rico population that wanted that but then turn around and demand that the US bail them out from poor financial management or provide disaster relief (which we are obviously doing and what we should do).
I just like to point out the hypocrisy of the situation.

All I can do is laugh at the irony of Puerto Ricans now demanding help from the US after all of the anti-American sentiment I've witnessed during my time there.
In the 2012, referendum, 46% voted to remain a territory, 33% voters for statehood, 18% voted for free association, and only 3% voted for independence.
And although turnout was historically low, in the referendum in June of this year, 97.2% voted for statehood, 1.3% voted to remain a territory, and only 1.5% voted for free association/independence.
Basically since 1997, no fewer than 79% voted for either territory or statehood status and no more than 3% voted for independence.
So the anti-American sentiment you witnessed, was probably related to being stationed there and that minority viewpoint being presented disproportionately at the base.

Their desire for statehood has nothing to do with their debt, right?
Posted on 9/27/17 at 9:18 am to roadGator
quote:It probably does, but it was always a popular sentiment. I think the results from this year are skewed by the extremely low turnout (21%), but the polls still had it at 52% support, which is not significantly different from the 46.6% in 1997.
Their desire for statehood has nothing to do with their debt, right?
Either way, the one position that has consistently had the least support by a significant margin is independence, which is completely counter to what the OP is arguing.

You've corrected the record again.
Can you figure out a way to get paid at it?

You've corrected the record again.
Is there something wrong with providing facts when they are counter to one's anecdotal information?
