If the new plan is:

Less Tax
Less regulation
more tariffs

I say, 2 out 3 ain't bad.

ETA: but yeah, it's not Friedman level perfection.

Free Trade is ideal when the trade is actually free Trade.

NAFTA is not free Trade because both Mexico and Canada have a VAT.

So their goods come in to us tax free but our goods get taxed.

The world will never know free trade as long as the United States is spending more than the next 26 industrialized nations on the security of the world. That is not in any manner a level playing field. The US is much more benevolent in its protection than either China or Russia will ever be. Tariffs are a horrible idea EXCEPT when you consider that we are subsidizing the world's manufacturers at the expense of our own.

We don't need tariffs, although they will be much more politically acceptable even to those nations on which they are imposed...what we need is to tell the world that they are on their own as far as securing markets and transport of their capital and goods.

We are not going to do that by increasing military spending because the world will see it for what it is...empty rhetoric.

What does Friedman have to say about the benefits of imperialism to those nations not involved in building and maintaining an empire? Not a fricking word...and thus his views of economics are not applicable to the world in it's current reality. There is no way...none...not a chance in the world...that GM, Ford and Chrysler, just to name a few, would have more than token competition in the world if it weren't for the US Military ensuring global security and secure markets. Damn a tariff what about simply ending the subsidies and doing so in a fashion that leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that they are on their own...all of a sudden the only place to build a car is in Michigan....

Trump won on a platform of making things better for working people. Working people put him in office. If you now want him to bail on them, well then FU and get ready to never win another election if he does.

And more to the point Trump drew up a road map for politicians for the foreseeable future...pander to the middle class and to working people and you will be elected. It makes no difference what party you belong to and it won't matter your race or sex...simply tell the middle class that you will consider their interests and you are in like Flynn....we are going to see much more of this in the future.

By the way this is an initial merging of two schools of thought in the US which took hold in the great recession...the tea party and occupy wall street...this is common ground between the two groups that has existed since the onset of the industrial revolution and it is something that the aristocracy has fought for centuries because it leads to their losing power and wealth.

I promise y'all this is as true a fact as many of you were not fans of Barrack Obama simply because he was black...only after that fact did you find reasons other than that to not like him...I know you will deny it but you and I also know it is a fact...but I digress...the other fact that is just as true is that many, many, many progressives could not care less if women can marry women or a man in a skirt has to piss in the men's room IF the progressive is not in constant danger of being financially ruined with a couple of weeks of unemployment. There is common ground between the staunchest conservative who is stressed about losing their job and the biggest bed wetting liberal concerned about the same thing....and Trump has tapped into that common ground...he may not even realize it but the people who voted for him do and they will support similar candidates down the road.

This is what a rebellion in the US looks like....Trump may or may not be the man to get the job done but get done it will because American labor has been pushed as far as it can be pushed without breaking....and it ain't organized labor it is working people, period.

It isn't. Tariffs are simply the stick to enforce fair trade
