that's a point well-taken and probably true. but no matter where such a cut takes place, it will hurt the local economy badly.

More than 1000 US Bases and/or Military Installations

The main sources of information on these military installations (e.g. C. Johnson, the NATO Watch Committee, the International Network for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases) reveal that the US operates and/or controls between 700 and 800 military bases Worldwide.

In this regard, Hugh d’Andrade and Bob Wing’s 2002 Map 1 entitled “U.S. Military Troops and Bases around the World, The Cost of ‘Permanent War’”, confirms the presence of US military personnel in 156 countries.
Since 80% of our bases are overseas, and since economics of base closure are predominantly local, one would think closures and consolidation abroad would be a better answer. For example along with 1 USAF base, do we need 4 naval bases in Italy? Along with those 5, do we need 2 army bases in Italy?

Just asking.

i initially thought this thread was supposed to be about jobs from shipbuilding, not bases in general- the article linked in the OP most certainly was.

but to answer your suggestion, i agree for italy and in general. although i can see why we have multiple navy/marine bases/air stations up and down Japan- we probably can't consolidate everywhere as long as our missions remain what they are. i also wonder if our Status of Forces agreements might preclude us from consolidating in some places as a condition of being in the host country to begin with
