I'm listening to ESPN radio this morning, I know my own fault. This guy Clinton Yates is filling in for LeBatard. In response to Chris Long joining with Malcom Jenkins protest last night's game, he's pumped. What bothers me is he believes these protest and statements are part of the league now to stay. And if people don't want to see this sort of stuff it's too bad; it's all intertwined now. I'll tune out the NFL if all this is the focus. Are there enough others that'll do the same to hurt ratings? When does the customer have an effect on a product to change it? Maybe others aren't tired of it yet.

Remains to be seen.
But viewers speaking with their remote controls certainly hurt the NFL last season.

People should stop buying tickets, jerseys, etc.

The media makes sure they don't miss a minute of someone from the left disrespecting the country.

The NFL needs competition.

If there's another season of widespread anthem protests, I think NFL ratings are going to take a lot bigger hit than they did last year.

NBA may not be far behind...and ESPN is already feeling the pinch on the NBA because of that massive TV deal that they signed before ESPN started bleeding subscribers due to combination of "cut the cable" movement and people who got tired of the political/social commentary on a "sports" network

This is going to hurt the NFL fairly bigly IMO.

NBA fanbase is INSANELY liberal - insanely. It won't hurt basketball as much as it will NFL.

I honestly don't know why anyone gives a shite about this.

I've never seen anyone get up off their couch and stand for the national anthem in their living room while watching the game on TV.

Hell, I don't know why they show that part on TV anyway.

Have there been numbers supporting this? Because I have a hard time believing it's true.

But if it is and it starts costing the league money, and eventually teams and players in reduced contracts, you'll find these protests go away rather quickly. The bravery of protesting will get exhausted when the paychecks dry up.

I stopped watching the NFL or any pro sports for that matter years ago. What politics are doing to sports is unreal and I am afraid that politics will eventually ruin sports for us all. For example, California banning its state colleges from traveling to certain states. The players dont give a shite about the political affiliation of the team or state they are about to play, all they are worried about is beating their opponent.

I wonder when ESPN will stop talking about schools like Bama because of the which state it is in? When is ESPN going to turn on bama?

The problem is, they wont because of $. But, will other schools such as Ole Miss get black balled not for their NCAA violations but because their state flag hurts peoples "feelings" etc.

Will the Ole Miss/Cal game get canceled because of protesters? I honestly hope it does, because the democrats will lose a lot of voters!

BTW, I find it Ironic that Toddy is an Ole Miss fan

I watch sports to get away from reality for a couple of hours on the weekend. I don't want to be bombarded with political lectures from players or commentators. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way.

Per ESPN

quote:

Broadcasters of NFL games saw television viewership drop by an average of 8 percent for the 2016 regular season, as a typical game was watched by 1.4 million fewer people than last season (16.5 million versus 17.9 million), according to league data obtained by ESPN.

Prime-time broadcasts were the most affected. ESPN's Monday Night Football (17 games) and NBC's Sunday Night Football (19 games, including two Thursdays), the two most costly rights deals, were down 12 and 10 percent, respectively, in total viewers.

Daytime games on Fox and CBS, which each broadcast 27 games, were down 6 and 7 percent, respectively, in total viewers.

Fair enough, I stand corrected, assuming that's attributed to people not watching because of the protesting.

Granted, some people tried tying the ratings drop last year to unusually high interest in the 2016 election campaigns. So I guess if the protests go on again this year, we'll see what it does to ratings and know if last year was the protests or election causing the dropoff.

Trump tried and failed at that as well.

The only people I've heard say that they've stopped watching because of the protests are posters on this site and talk radio callers who always seem to call in immediately after someone protests during a game they "stopped watching".

Yeah, no one who really enjoys the sport of football is stupid enough to let one person's political beliefs rob them of something THEY enjoy. I want to believe not even some posters around here are that stupid.

The irony is that the outrage has likely fueled this. Look at Kaepernick: he sat for a few games before some sportswriter discovered it, and then he basically went from MLK rhetoric to Louis Farrakhan rhetoric. In other words, some are being reinforced by the attention, going beyond any rational social stance, while some may at least maintain reasonableness though.

And it's not like players haven't been outspoken before and often to ridiculous levels (Adrian Peterson competing NFL to slavery). So the most logical conclusion as to why sitting through the national anthem has become so popular is that people react to it, and they seem to have a greater reaction to it than when they made wildly ridiculous comments.

Just like the SJWers reactions emboldens the alt-right, the SJWer like reactions to this emboldens the players as well.

People seem to care more about this than when a player does something legitimately terrible. Remember when AP's child abuse? I don't recall even close to the same level of outrage for that, and some even defended it. But sit for the national anthem, or criticize Trump, and people are vowing to never watch it again.

And the irony is that they sound like the SJWers they love to demonize.
