Photos can lie: The real story behind Obama's selfie

That's the headline on this NBC story on the MSNBC website.

Nice to see the MSM doing work, making sure Dear Leader's image is not tarnished.

quote:

First lady not peeved, says photographer who caught the Obama selfie

The photographer who captured the picture of President Barack Obama posing for a selfie during Nelson Mandela’s memorial wants to set the record straight.

First, the president really didn’t commit a funeral faux pas by posing for the selfie, the photographer said. And second, the first lady wasn’t as annoyed as she looked.

“Photos can lie,” AFP photographer Roberto Schmidt wrote in a blog post, “The story behind ‘the selfie.’”

Schmidt took the photograph of Obama smiling Tuesday for a self-portrait along with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt, who took the picture with her smartphone.

Although other photos showed First Lady Michelle Obama looking peeved over the display, “in reality just a few seconds earlier the first lady was herself joking with those around her, Cameron and Schmidt included,” the photographer said.

“Her stern look was captured by chance,” he said.

Since when do photogs have to go on record clarifying the mood someone was in when a photo was taken?

Whats the old adage? a picture is worth a thousand words?

Next Wolf Blitzer will be along to "fact check" the photo.

When will the media quit trying to protect and defend every little thing the Obamas do?

im sure that look was chosen out of the hundreds of pictures that were taken. there was an agenda from the start, and it was pretty funny.

The headline I see from your link is this:

quote:

Were you referring to a different story?

Do you deny the fact that photos often do lie? How often do you pause your DVR and it catches the people on screen in a ridiculous looking facial pose that has no bearing at all on what is actually going on onscreen?

This selfie story was big news yesterday and naturally there are going to be follow on stories. Why does it bother you that NBC evidently actually went to the source to see what the situation was?

They cannot stand even the suggestion of a superficially negative story, that absolutely appears to have some substance to it.

I don't care if they try to explain MO's mood. I do care that BO (and other world leaders) can't show a little decorum and respect at a memorial service. I never would have thought that the POTUS and UK PM would be acting like a couple of 15 year old girls. It really disturbs me that this is what society is coming to.

I'm sure there will be an imminent release of dozens of photos of Michelle laughing and joking around with the white lady.

At no time did the story ever appear to have any substance to it whatsoever.

Barack Obama did not appear to be laughing and joking with another world leader, and Michelle did not appear to be in a somewhat dour mood about it? I saw a half dozen pictures that would suggest that was true.

I would love to see photos from the event suggesting the opposite.

(Is this much ado about nothing? Certainly - my point isn't about the substance of this, in the grand scheme of things, it is just this rush to mitigate something so minor - Frederick the Great said, "He who defends everything, defends nothing." They're campaigning all the time and there is a certain fatigue to it. Ignore this story and it goes away in a day or two - particularly in the shadow of this major event. Rush out to address these trifling complaints, only extends the life span of the deal and makes you look defensive - at least IMHO.)

I don't disagree that plenty of media folks are in the tank for the Blessed One. But you could also argue that the fact that it even turned into a "thing" in the first place is evident of another group of biased folks at work.

You can't control what the other side does - you can only control what you do.

I've laughed and joked around at a funeral - it is natural - I got some laughs delivering my father's eulogy. It breaks the tension, and you can't just be somber all the time - I'm sure BHO barely knew Mandela, if at all. The point is, if you dignify every attack with some sort of defense, at a certain point, it gives it credibility. Michelle looks angry to me all the time, unless she's forcing a smile on. It would be no surprise that she's in a foul mood after a 16+ hour plane ride, Air Force One, or not, I sure would be.

This pretense that they're superhuman - that doesn't serve them well. If you want to take an example of what W did right is that he at least appeared to be just another doofus, goofy slob like the rest of us. Part of the reason Kerry did so poorly in 2004 is that he acted like he was better than the rest of us.

Just my $0.02.

I don't recall NBC looking to get perspective on this photo. But I do recall the left attempting to make GWB appear to be less than aware of what just took place.
