Why does he get a pass from touchy-feely liberals and why do they feel they have credibility to criticize Trump for how he deals with the issue they helped create?

This was done to fight a global ideological movement that was responsible for the deaths of 200 million people in the 20th century alone.
The other was done so the Gulf States could get a pipeline to Europe.
