Some highlights (emphasis added):

quote:

But CNN declined to include the specific allegations contained in the dossier — such as collusion between Mr. Trump’s team and Russian operatives — saying that its journalists could not independently verify them

quote:

BuzzFeed’s decision, besides its immediate political ramifications for a president-elect who is to be inaugurated in 10 days, was sure to accelerate a roiling debate about the role and credibility of the traditional media in today’s frenetic, polarized information age.

Of particular interest was the use of unsubstantiated information from anonymous sources, a practice that fueled some of the so-called fake news — false rumors passed off as legitimate journalism — that proliferated during the presidential election.

quote:

In a brief interview in the Times newsroom on Tuesday evening, Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The Times, said the paper would not publish the document because the allegations were “totally unsubstantiated.”

quote:

Immediately after BuzzFeed’s publication, some reporters volunteered that they, too, had received copies of the report. “Raise your hand if you too were approached with this story,” Julia Ioffe, a journalist who has written extensively on Russia, wrote on Twitter, adding that she had not reported on the information in the document “because it was impossible to verify.”

Writers at the blog Lawfare, which covers national security issues, said they had been in possession of the document “for a couple of weeks” but opted not to publish because the allegations were unproven.

“Yes, they are explosive; they are also entirely unsubstantiated, at least to our knowledge, at this stage,” the site wrote on Tuesday night. “For this reason, even now, we are not going to discuss the specific allegations within the document.”

Interesting times, indeed...

It's so far out there that only a place like Buzzfeed and a joke like CNN would tie themselves to it.

It's good that the NYT is at least trying to keep some of their journalistic integrity in tact.

Is the MSM trying to carve a niche in itself to convince people that some of the MSM is honest?

Conan was right, Buzzfeed really is running out of lists. I guess they needed some fake news to fill the space.

This should cost every CNN Exec involved with this their heads...Tapper and his cast of clowns should be fired...Tapper admitted on worldwide TV, these allegations were unsubstantiated and may never be proven.

So now we have a clear picture. Our CIA is on the same level as BuzzFeed. I can just imagine president trump sitting in the oval office, and in bursts the director of the CIA." Mr. Trump, Mr. Trump, we just found out a grandma has discovered a way to remove Isis using this one weird trick! "

But they want so so badly to believe them, and that's all that matters in their minds.

Tapper and the gang on CNN just said the reporting of the unverified details was irresponsible. I agree. Reporting that Trump was briefed about a report that the Russians have compromising information on him is absolutely inbounds, however.

I read this just as the New York Times. It is a report, but more importantly it is only alleged to be a credible report. I don't assume credibility. This one doesn't get a pass on that. Of course it would be good for my tribe if it is true, but it seems suspect.

Not as suspect as pizzagate, but suspect nonetheless.

So, just cracking the lid on Pandora's Box (actually, Jar) is okay, but throwing off the cover is not (even though lifting the lid would undoubtedly lead to the cover being tossed aside)?

That's like I hear secondhand hearsay, completely unsubstantiated and unverifiable, about you that you take bribes from Chinese spies in exchange for military secrets. I just report that there's information out there that could affect your security clearance, but say nothing about the "details." There's no legitimate argument I can make that would support the notion that my "report" would not lead to the underlying allegations seeing the light of day.

Reporting that Teump was briefed on a given topic by the IC isn't second-hand heresay. And if, in the by and by, you heard something like that about me, I'd hope you'd contact the FBI so that it could be investigated and adjudicated. We have too many holes in our intelligence services as it is.
