NYT: Profiting from a Child's Illiteracy

LINK

An interesting - and painfully true - perspective on America's safety net, how it can be taken advantage of, and how it can lead to generations of dependency. I appreciate Mr. Kristof's honesty and objectivity on the subject.

quote:

This is painful for a liberal to admit, but conservatives have a point when they suggest that America’s safety net can sometimes entangle people in a soul-crushing dependency.

If you are going to provide SSI to children, which makes no sense as children should not have income value to the dysfunctionals (it cause them to have more of them). SSI shouldn't be based upon indolence but on an actual disability.

I really feel like SSI abuse gets highlighted only because Obama is President. It bothers me because I know for a fact that abuse of this and other programs has been around for at least 20 years.

This article is about the abuse. Not the President.
