This is pretty much for the read, but the graphics are interesting. Oh, and they exclude suicides! It is pretty clear indication we have a serious issue with gun violence, although I don't think there is a clear easy way to answer it.
Honestly I would have liked it if they had included major foreign cities - mexico city, sao paolo, jakarta, tokyo, london, paris, johannasburg, moscow. Although I can imagine the data might be hard to obtain.

On Sunday night in Las Vegas, 58 people were killed in a single mass shooting, one of the deadliest in American history. How does that compare with the daily gun deaths in cities across the United States?
In Chicago, 58 people were killed by guns in a span of 28 days, counting back from Sept. 29, two days before the Las Vegas attack. Many shootings were of one person, not mass attacks. In Baltimore, there were 58 gun deaths in 68 days. In Houston, it was 118 days.
These and other cities are shown below. The gun deaths, all from 2017, were tracked by the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that catalogs episodes of gun violence.

Strict gun laws doing work!

There is no such thing. People commit crimes not guns.

Most gun homicides in America involve gang wars that use illegally obtained firearms, most of which are handguns

sure, do you think that there would have been 58 murders in 28 days in chicago without guns? I doubt any rational person does.

I wonder how many murders are committed without using a gun. Violence is violence. The guns have nothing to do with it.
Cain was the first to commit murder and he used a rock.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. Another could be that it's a pretty clear we have a serious issue with something else...

But why don't you walk into those low income, murderous areas of Chicago for us and find out?
Also, the city with the highest gun murder rate has some of the most strict gun laws in the country. Care to explain that?

Yep, and they ignore the daily black on black violence every damn day

in 2014, 11,961 murders. 8124 by firearm. 67%. Knives were the next highest at just under 15%.

this makes no sense.

Did I advocate for stricter gun control here?

I think it's pretty clear we have a black on black crime issue.

both can be true.
The FBI compiles this by race, but not all municipalities report race statistics so it is incomplete data.

Per that link, whites are both the top victim and offender. Although since most murderers, especially in cities, are not solved, the racial mixup of the murders is likely way off.

If you could wave a magic wand and make guns disappear, sure, it would probably have a significant effect on the number of murders.
But gun control legislation is not magic. You violate the rights of law-abiding citizens, 99.99% do not commit a crime and still street gangs will still possess illegal guns. That is a terrible outcome.
Here go read this by a liberal NYT/Washinton Post writer/researcher: I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise

You could make every single gun illegal .... still wouldn't stop criminals from using them...

Thank you. I had no desire to look that up.
If we struck down the 2nd ammendment and outlawed all guns, then I believe that the majority of those gun deaths would still happen. If someone's intent is to kill then they will kill. 8124 gun deaths in 1 year in a population of over 330MM is very small. My point is, gun violence is still violence. There will always be violence.

I 100% completely agree. I own multiple guns. I grew up around guns, although they do scare me. I am not going to turn in or register my guns.
with that said, I haven't really heard of other answers besides gun control. I am 100% all ears for other solutions. I did hear about making gun owners own insurance, which might work. More likely the responsible gun owners would buy insurance, and the irresponsible ones would not. I would suspect that most murders are by irresponsible gun owners and/or done by illegally obtained handguns.

It’s statistically insignificant.

We have a culture problem. It began we abandoned the importance of having good morals, character, and social norms.
quote:one thing is for sure, you won’t be able to legislate people into being good moral characters. Banning guns won’t make that happen.
although I don't think there is a clear easy way to answer it.
