We love our state's rights, don't we folks?

quote:

Officials in Los Angeles have asked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents working in the city not to identify themselves as police.

In a letter addressed to the ICE deputy field office director who handles immigration enforcement, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Attorney Mike Feuer, and president of the city council Herb Wesson wrote:

quote:

"In Los Angeles, the term 'police' is synonymous with the Los Angeles Police Department, so for ICE agents to represent themselves as police misleads the public into believing they are interacting with LAPD. This is especially corrosive given that to advance public safety, the LAPD does not initiate police action with the objective of determining a person's immigration status."

quote:

The disagreement between Los Angeles and federal officials is the latest in a series of public arguments about how local governments do, or don't, assist federal agents operating in their cities after executive actions were issued to crack down on people living in the U.S. illegally.

This is too easy. Trump needs to use the Insurrection Act declare it lawlessness in California and send in the US Army. Or on the other hand Congress should declare a war on illegal immigration and then Posse Comitatus is not valid. Either way we put trained Soldiers on the front enforcing illegal immigration and cut out the "police."

That's a horrible idea on so many levels. The U.S. military is not a law enforcement agency and should not be deployed amongst US citizens except during extreme crisis, illegal immigration has not reached that level

Yes, and they have the right to lose federal funding for failing to comply with federal law. California is welcome to secede peacefully as far as I'm concerned.

i'm more just laughing at how many arguments have flipped for both "sides" over the past few months. 2-3 years ago nobody would ever believe California would be leading the charge for state's rights over federal oppression

The left tried to make the term states rights synonymous with legalized bigotry, has that changed?

Fwiw neither party is supportive of states rights. Each wipes its arse with the 10th amendment

In most cities, but especially LA, belief by the immigrant community (legal or illegal) is crucial for effective policing. ICE identifying themselves as police will severely limit and erode the ability of LAPD to keep the community safe. Moreover, ICE is not a police force and shouldn't identify as such.

Is this supposed to be a coherent thought?

ok this is just patently incorrect

i understand this argument from a theoretical perspective, but in actual application, it's absurd

you could literally apply the same argument to any group of criminals, b/c police rely on information from them, too

Not when they are taking actions that can adversely affect the other fifty six states.

California lets in illegals into their states what's to stop those illegals from then entering other states?

Per Wiki you're dead wrong.

quote:

A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder.

ICE is trying to enforce immigration laws, no?

I never thought I'd live to see the day where elected officials like mayors and governors (who all happen to all be democrats BTW) openly violate the law. All this shows just how Democrats will always put their political agenda above the laws of this country.

I am sure, that in the NPR mindset, ICE is the perpetrator in doing illegal things.

They are criminals insofar as they have no legal status. Community policing and outreach has proven effective.

But the boogeyman complex Trump has managed to make R's feel is nothing short of spectacular.

California is lost.

I saw on oan last night where a Vietnamese-american republican in that state senate, whose family sought asylum here during the war, was using her floor time to condemn the late dem sen Hayden, who supported the north fricking vietnamese. The dems running the session cut her mic and had her physically removed from the hall by their goons.
